Social Work is such a female presenting dominated field, however, we know mental health challenges affect our black men at a disproportionate rate. So, it's always good to be apart of such necessary mental health conversations from our black male providers for our black men. Especially nice to see my former colleague Ken continuing in the work! Feel free to register to listen in the conversation.

November is recognized as Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. The B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. Collective returns with a gathering that centers the voices of Black men in social work who are leading conversations on liberation, leadership, and community impact.

"Childhood Bereavement is a critical issue and an increasingly important national public health priority".

In Philadelphia, 1 in 8 children are projected to experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. The highest of the nation's counties and there is unclaimed financial support available (see info page) to release some of the unexpected grief related stressors that impact a child's grief process and wellbeing.
-Childhood Estimation Bereavement Model (CBEM) County Level Report

As a Senior Grief Clinician, on a weekly basis I encounter some of these same youth and continue to see their courage and strength as they show up in their different levels of grief. This is in the middle of a school day with other peers they're often meeting for the first time.

Such grief support is an evidenced based grief related protective factor that I'm so appreciative to be apart of with our amazing Philly youth!

CBEM provides important estimated statistics by state & city that are essential to consider when serving children grieving.
The results indicate 1 in 11 children in Pennsylvania will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18 years old...
Although I grew up in Louisiana, at age 17 years old, this stat became my unfortunate reality after one of my older sister's died of cancer. It was a very disruptive time in my life. I'm grateful for my family and a school counselor's support but I can only imagine how much more supported my family and I would have felt with knowledge of supportive grief care and childhood bereavement resources.

"The Cost of Inaction: The death of a parent, sibling, or other important person in a child's life is one of the most frequently reported disruptive childhood experiences and without appropriate support, can adversly affect lifelong health and wellbeing".

I'm so grateful to be able to support, students, youth and families grieving the loss of a loved one in my practice and as a Senior Grief Clinician at my job. It is such a sacred and unpredictable journey no one ask to be on and one that is more bearable with awareness and ongoing support.

As a Psychotherapist I continue to provide Courageous Healing Conversations for our underserved & at risk communities, including our lovely Broad & Olney community, on Saturdays.

This time with rhytmic breathing, somatic and theraplay based movement that promotes healing in our nervous system and self regulation.

We continue to provide healing & wellness resiliency zones for our communities.

Our Broad & Olney Family that are served weekly have been so responsive and appreciative to the mental health support provided in the heart of our beloved neighbor(hood).

Back by popular demand, this past Saturday were polyvagal based therapeutic hand massages accompanied with aromatherapy.

Also, psychoeducation on our vagus nerve and it's direct impact on our ability to center, manage our activated nervous system (fight or flight state) and overcome a collapsed survival state was shared using the Polyvagal ladder illustration. Breathwork was also practiced and make and take wellness bags with essential oils and healing herbs of their choosing, we're made.

Often, it's too sacred and confidential to capture in the moment pictures but the testimonies of the impact of our culturally responsive mental health care on their wellbeing, is priceless.

One of our community members continously thanked me for my services and was in pure awe to see my practice on the ground with our people.

On Saturday, July 12th, 2025 - We recognized Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

Our Broad and Olney Family, one of our most underserved & underresourced beloved communities, received therapeutic hand massages using aromatherapy for stress reduction, which helped to center, ground and calm the nervous system. We also practiced mindfulness and breath work as a coping tool to manage our unique life stressors.

This was also alongside our self-directed self-care - refresh and recharge, wellness station to promote good hygiene care with complimentary fruits and fruit drink (passion fruit).

Overall, this was extremely impacted and useful for our community members as expressed by them. An equal ratio of 50 percent of women and 50 percent of men participated with the involvement of both young adults and elders.
