Your foot is not supposed to be stiff. It’s supposed to adapt.

A healthy foot with an arch doesn’t just hit the ground and stay rigid. It lands, the arch gently lowers, the foot pronates, and that motion allows your body to adjust to uneven surfaces, slick pavement, and unpredictable terrain. That small “smooshing” motion is not weakness. It’s intelligence.

When the arch can move well, it improves proprioception and kinesthetic awareness. Your brain receives better information from the ground, and that helps you stay balanced. As we get older, that foot function often decreases. The arch becomes stiff, the foot loses adaptability, and balance becomes harder.

The good news is this can be trained. We specialize in helping people improve foot function so they can move more confidently and safely.

There are three Stand Up to Falls classes remaining, every Friday at 11:00 AM at Old Pine Community Center. They are completely free, sponsored by Independence Blue Cross, and each class stands alone.

If you’re ready for more individualized guidance, you can also schedule a No Sweat Intro call with Triad Wellness and we’ll talk about your specific needs.

Walk in, sign up, and take control of your balance.

There are five classes left — and they may be the most important ones yet.

Falls don’t happen because people aren’t careful enough.
They happen because the body isn’t prepared for the moment something unexpected occurs. A slip. A twist. A misstep. And when that moment comes, everything can change in seconds.

These final five Stand Up to Falls classes are about giving yourself something powerful: knowledge, strength, and confidence. Each class focuses on a different type of fall and a different physical skill that helps prevent it. Together, they teach you how your body works, where your risks are, and what you can do about them.

This isn’t about exercise for exercise’s sake.
It’s about protecting your independence.
It’s about continuing to walk your neighborhood, travel, spend time with family, and live life without constant fear of falling.

Thanks to the support of Independence Blue Cross, all classes are completely free. There is nothing to lose, and so much to gain.

If you’ve been thinking about coming, this is your sign.
If you’ve been meaning to take better care of yourself, this is your opportunity.

Picture yourself at the shore this summer, sitting low in a beach chair with sand under your feet.

Getting up from that chair isn’t about willpower. It’s about having strength in deeper ranges of motion. Many people are strong enough to stand up from a normal chair, but a beach chair requires far more leg strength, balance, and control. If those ranges aren’t trained, your body simply doesn’t have strength there.

That’s what we mean when we say strength is range-of-motion specific.

Right now it’s winter in Philadelphia. Sidewalks are icy and movement feels cautious. But summer will come, and daily activities like twisting, turning, standing up from low positions, and walking on uneven surfaces will demand more from your body.

This Friday’s Stand Up to Falls class will focus on rotational balance, a critical skill for preventing falls both in winter conditions and during everyday summer activities.

You’re invited to walk in and join us.

Consistency is the difference between hoping you don’t fall and training so you don’t.

Strong legs don’t come from one good workout. They come from showing up again and again, especially when conditions make falling more likely. And right now in Philadelphia, snow and ice are still on the ground. Sidewalks are slick. Corners are uneven. One wrong step can change everything.

Leg strength is what helps you slow your body down when you slip, regain control when you twist, and stay upright when the ground doesn’t cooperate. Without consistency, that strength fades. And when strength fades, falls become more likely.

That’s why Stand Up to Falls exists. These weekly seminars are designed to help you build and maintain the strength, balance, and awareness needed to stay independent through real-world conditions, not perfect ones.

This Friday, 2/6, we’ll be focusing on rotational falls, a type of fall that often happens when the body turns while the feet are stuck, something that’s especially dangerous on icy sidewalks.

If the winter weather has made you feel cautious or unsure on your feet, this is for you.

Yes — tomorrow’s class is still on.

We’ll be meeting Friday, January 30 at 11:00 AM, and the focus will be on leg strength, one of the most important attributes for preventing falls.

Strong legs help you slow momentum, recover from a trip, and catch yourself during a slip. Without leg strength, balance strategies often fail when you need them most.

Join all the others who have already taken control of their health, confidence, and independence by learning how to Stand Up to Falls.

Walking safely in the real world means more than just putting one foot in front of the other.

We don’t walk with our eyes straight ahead and our head perfectly still. We scan our surroundings. We listen. We turn our head to see who or what is around us. The real question is this: can you turn your head while walking and still glide your body weight over your base leg without losing balance?

That skill matters right now.

Ice-covered sidewalks, uneven pavement, and winter distractions demand balance while moving and observing. If your body can’t manage weight shift, single-leg support, and head movement at the same time, the risk of slipping or falling increases fast.

This is exactly what we train in Stand Up to Falls. Not gym balance. Real-life balance for sidewalks, streets, and everyday situations.

Join us for Class 4 this Friday, where we continue building the skills needed to move confidently and safely through winter conditions.

Falls are not caused by one single problem.
They are complex, and that’s why preventing them takes more than one class.

Each week of Stand Up to Falls focuses on a different type of fall and a different physical attribute needed to prevent it. Balance, awareness, reaction time, and strength all work together. If even one of these is missing, fall risk increases.

That’s why this is a 10-week series. We’re not guessing. We’re systematically addressing the real reasons people fall.

Class 4 is this Friday, and the focus is leg strength, one of the most important and most overlooked pieces of fall prevention. Strong legs help you slow momentum, recover from a trip, and catch yourself during a slip.

New participants are always welcome. Each class stands on its own.

Most people don’t fall because they’re weak.
They fall because their body can’t react fast enough.

In this video, you’re seeing low-impact jumping jacks from Class 2 of our Stand Up to Falls program. This exercise trains your body to shift weight side to side quickly and safely, which is exactly what’s required to prevent a lateral fall.

When balance is challenged, your body has only a split second to respond. If you don’t practice that response, the risk of falling goes up. Low-impact jumping jacks help improve reaction time, coordination, and control without putting stress on your joints.

This kind of training protects your hips, supports independence, and helps you stay confident during everyday movements like stepping sideways, changing direction, or catching yourself if you get bumped.

Balance is a skill.
And skills fade if they aren’t practiced.

Most people don’t realize this until it’s too late: falling to the side is one of the most life-changing types of falls.

Sideways falls are the leading cause of hip fractures. And a hip fracture doesn’t just cause pain. It often leads to loss of independence, loss of confidence, and long recovery periods that change how people live day to day.

In this video, I’m demonstrating the Lateral Balance Test, one of the five balance tests we use in the Stand Up to Falls program. This test shows how well you can control your balance side to side, something your body relies on every time you step off a curb, reach sideways, or get bumped unexpectedly.

Here’s the important part:
If you don’t test balance, you don’t know your risk.
If you don’t train balance, it won’t improve on its own.

We encourage everyone to take this test. You can visit our website to learn how to perform it safely and understand what your results mean.

And if you want hands-on guidance, join us for Class 3 this Friday, where we’ll focus on forward and backward falls from trips and slips, something many people experienced after the recent snow and ice.

You can do everything right for your health — and one fall can still change your life in an instant.

Longevity training is not just about living longer. It’s about protecting your physical freedom, independence, and confidence as the years go by. And one of the most overlooked pieces of longevity training is balance.

If balance isn’t practiced, it fades.
If balance fades, falls become more likely.
And when falls happen, life often changes overnight.

That’s why we train balance intentionally at Stand Up to Falls. Not just with exercises, but by teaching you how your body reacts, how to control movement, and how to stay upright in real-life situations like walking, turning, reaching, or navigating uneven ground.

This is about staying independent.
This is about continuing to do the things you love.
This is about preventing a moment that could take that away.

A single slip on snow or a small trip on the sidewalk can change everything.

After the snow we had this past weekend, many older adults are realizing just how quickly a forward or backward fall can happen. These are called sagittal plane falls, and they are one of the most common ways people get seriously injured from trips and slips.

This Friday’s Stand Up to Falls class is focused entirely on helping you feel safer and more prepared when the ground is slippery, uneven, or unpredictable.

You’ll learn how your body reacts when you trip, why some people recover their balance while others fall, and what you can do to improve your ability to catch yourself before hitting the ground. This class goes beyond simple exercises and teaches you how to recognize danger early and respond with more confidence and control.

Coach Steve has spent 15 years as a fall-prevention specialist, helping older adults stay independent by training balance, awareness, and real-life movement skills that matter most during everyday situations like winter walking.

You can’t prevent a fall if you don’t understand how your body knows where it is.

Many fall-prevention programs focus only on exercises. What they often miss is the internal skill behind balance.

Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense where your joints are in space.
Kinesthetic awareness is your ability to feel and control movement as it’s happening.

When either one is off, balance becomes unreliable.

That’s why Stand Up to Falls is different.

These classes teach you how to truly feel your feet on the ground, recognize when your weight shifts too far to one side, and notice loss of balance before a fall happens. This type of internal body awareness is rarely taught in traditional fall-prevention courses, but it is essential for staying upright and confident as we age.

Coach Steve brings 15 years of experience as a fall-prevention specialist, working with older adults to rebuild balance, confidence, and independence from the inside out. You are not just told what to do. You are taught how your body works so everyday movements like walking, turning, and reaching feel safer.
