A week ago I had an amazing experience racing the Ironman New York 70.3 at Jones Beach. And while I’m super proud and happy to be back at this distance 10 years after my first, posting a photo on social media really makes me thing about what it all means.
Just as in life, it is not about the end result, it’s about the journey. If the race had been cancelled, modified, or I got injured and couldn’t race, it doesn’t make the last year a waste. All the good summed up in this photo is just a celebration of the early mornings, long miles and hours, and re-focus of what’s important in my life.
I did not post a million updates on my training the past year. Nobody “came along” for the journey. Because it was personal. You can do something big, awesome, and hard without telling anyone. You can also achieve a big goal and afterwards feel underwhelmed. Post something on social media and get some likes and comments? Well guess what the next day is another day. That’s a sugar high. So I’m here to say dream big. Make big goals and achieve them. But do them for you and you alone. The journey is what matters. Even if you fail. No amount of external validation will make you feel happy. You do it so when you’re alone in bed at night you can tell yourself you achieved something big. That’s what counts. Stay hard everyone.
