Swift Steps: The Recovery Community for Swifties

Swift Steps: The Recovery Community for Swifties https://swiftsteps.org/join-the-community With a history deeply rooted in addiction, I am a testament to the resilient spirit of recovery.
(1)

Growing up amidst alcoholism, drug addiction, mental health challenges and domestic abuse, I bore the scars of those traumas. And even as I tried to distance myself from the legacy of my upbringing, addiction found me in numerous forms: from food to shopping, from relationships to substances. My journey to recovery wasn’t linear. I struggled with relapses, leaned on maintenance medications, attended 12-step meetings, intensive outpatient programs and used various harm reduction tools. I was convinced that formal treatment wasn’t for me but what I truly needed was genuine human connection. It was only when I surrounded myself with compassionate individuals who truly understood my struggles that I was able to shed the weight of shame and grow beyond my challenges. Today, as a recovery mentor and advocate, I bring this profound intimate understanding to help others navigate their own paths. Let me be your guiding hand, sharing both my missteps and successes, to light your journey towards a fulfilling life in recovery.

This is how your emails find us! 😅
We’re buried in snow over here on the East Coast ❄️
But recovery doesn’t pause for weather.
Neither does necessary support.
We’re still here. 🩵

02/23/2026

I was cleaning my office, my Taylor Swift room, and I bent down and saw it on the floor. A tiny white “M.”

And my body reacted before my brain could catch up.

For a split second I felt that old spark of excitement.
Muscle memory.
My nervous system recognizing something familiar and reaching for it automatically.

That moment scared me.
Not because I wanted to use.
But because it reminded me how fast the body can go there when it’s stressed, depleted, and in pain.

Then I picked it up.

It wasn’t a pill.
It was a white letter bead with an “M” on it.

And I just stood there like… wow.

The irony.
The comedy.
The reality.

Because even though it was “just a bead,” my reaction wasn’t nothing.
It was information.
It was my body telling me I’ve been living too close to the edge without admitting it.

Pain and insomnia are my biggest triggers.
I know that about myself.

I’ve been dealing with chronic pain in my hand for years.

At first, I managed it.
I had support.
I had care.
I had a chiropractor who helped me stay functional.

Then he passed away.
And for the last year, I’ve been white knuckling it.
Pushing through.
Telling myself it’s fine.
Minimizing it.
Ignoring how much it’s been wearing me down.

Chronic pain doesn’t just hurt your body.
It drains your patience.
It messes with your sleep.
It shrinks your window of tolerance.

Until everything feels sharp.
Urgent.
Unbearable.

That’s the exact zone where relapse starts whispering like it has solutions.

So the bead was my wake up call.
Not shame.
Not panic.
A decision.

I called out of work.
I booked the appointments.
I got in with specialists quickly.

Because I’m not doing “I’ll handle it later” anymore.
I’m not waiting until I’m desperate.
I’m not waiting until I’m spiraling.

Recovery, for me, is paying attention early.
It’s taking my triggers seriously.
It’s choosing care before pain becomes a crisis and insomnia becomes a breaking point.

And yeah… it’s pretty wild that a plastic letter bead can expose how deep the wiring goes.

But that’s the truth.

My body remembers.
And now I’m responding with protection instead of punishment.
