We’re continuing our Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week series with our third blog, focusing on something often overlooked in the journey out of homelessness: furniture. A furnished home offers comfort, dignity, and the ability to make choices that reflect who you are.

Community care is built through steady, everyday moments. When we check on our neighbors, lend support, or share what we have, we create a network that can hold people through difficult times. It is one of the simplest ways we can strengthen our community as we look ahead to an uncertain future. Read more:

Please join us in congratulating three Pathways staff members who recently reached major work anniversaries:

Rana Gardner (11 years) is our Lead Services Navigator and a trusted support for both staff and participants. Rana goes above and beyond to ensure participants are connected to the care and services they need. She leads with compassion, supporting folks through medical and recovery challenges while helping them stay engaged with their housing and healthcare goals. We’re grateful for Rana’s steady leadership and commitment to those we serve.

Javier Aguero (11 years) is the Director of Information Technology & MIS, keeping our systems running smoothly behind the scenes. From maintaining servers to troubleshooting tech issues with patience, he’s the go-to person for all things IT. We appreciate Javier’s reliability and the countless ways he keeps Pathways connected.

Dr. Kevin Hails (10 years) serves as Pathways’ Medical Director and staff Psychiatrist. Known for his calm demeanor and compassionate approach, Dr. Hails works closely with our nurses, behavioral health therapists, and other medical staff to ensure participants receive high-quality, person-centered care. His expertise and thoughtful presence make a lasting impact on both participants and staff. We’re thankful for Dr. Hails’ leadership and care over the past decade.

Thank you, Rana, Javier, and Dr. Hails. We appreciate you and your commitment to our participants and our mission. 💙

Our Community Inclusion events bring participants together, but 'Community Inclusion' goes beyond these celebrations. Every interaction with a participant is a chance for us to build connection and belonging. Those who have experienced homelessness often have fewer opportunities for social interaction, which makes the relationships they form with our staff especially meaningful. Our programs are rooted in relational care, reminding each person that they are seen, valued, and deserving of community.

Big changes to SNAP went into effect last month, and many Pennsylvanians could lose benefits if they don’t meet new work or volunteer requirements. If you or someone you know receives SNAP, you may qualify for an exemption that allows you to keep your benefits. This article from Kensington Voice breaks down who’s affected, what to do, and where to find help locally from Community Legal Services of Philadelphia and BenePhilly Centers. At Pathways, our clinical teams are identifying participants affected by these changes and connecting them to resources to appeal or meet requirements.
Read more:

As of September 1st, people receiving SNAP benefits are required to work, volunteer, or be in an employment training program a minimum of 20 hours a week in order to continue receiving assistance. If they don’t comply and aren’t exempt, their benefits will terminate December 1st.

Pathways to Housing PA currently provides homes and wraparound services for more than 500 participants in Philadelphia. All participants are supported by a dedicated case management team that helps address their unique housing, health, and community needs. Our service coordinators often find themselves behind the wheel, driving participants to medical appointments, the grocery store, community events, and our on-site clinic. Transportation, though often overlooked, is one of the biggest barriers to any type of care. It’s an important part of how we support our participants' stability and well-being.
