Last Thursday morning, PGY-5 resident, Dr. Elizabeth Card delivered Grand Rounds on malocclusion and its role in craniofacial and orthognathic surgery.

Dr. Card reviewed occlusal classification, clinical evaluation, and treatment planning, emphasizing how precise diagnosis and interdisciplinary collaboration drive optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes. The talk sparked engaging discussion and highlighted the importance of occlusion in reconstructive practice.

An insightful lecture and a great way to start the day.

Earlier this week, Dr. Fischer delivered the Rhoads Oration, marking a milestone that reflects the significance and trajectory of his research in surgery. He traced the full arc of abdominal wall reconstruction, from papyrus to prediction modeling, highlighting the convergence of years of discovery and innovation as his team builds a comprehensive, point-of-care precision prediction tool to transform surgical decision making. Grounded in a patient-centered approach, this work reframes how surgical success is measured, realigning outcomes with what each patient cares about most.

A central theme emerged: data is everywhere, but progress depends on building the right tools to capture, label, and connect it. By structuring the unstructured, Dr. Fischer illustrated how thoughtful data design and interdisciplinary collaboration can transform information into insight, and insight into better patient care.

A thoughtful, forward-looking lecture and well-deserved recognition of the surgical innovation, leadership, and impact that Dr. Fischer and the Penn Plastic Surgery team have had and continue to embark on in surgery. 👏

An early morning skills lab focused on hand and craniofacial fracture plating! Residents worked through faculty-led instruction and hands-on practice to refine their technique, ask questions, and learn at a pace outside the OR.

Thank you to our faculty for their time, guidance, and continued dedication to resident surgical education!

A (late) but warm welcome to this year’s Center for Human Appearance Clinical Research Fellows! Dr. Aamirah McCutchen and Timothy Olsen have been working tirelessly to represent our division at national meetings and working to publish various research studies in the literature. Thank you Tim and Aamirah! Since its inception in 2008, our clinical research fellowship has paved the way for many of our alumni to go on to complete training in plastic surgery at Penn and many other top tier institutions. Many are now faculty both at Penn and across the country!

Yesterday at the Department of Surgery D. Hayes Agnew Grand Rounds, we welcomed Dr. Paul Stephen Cederna, Robert Oneal Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan, as our invited speaker.

In his lecture, “Innovation and the Surgeon,” Dr. Cederna shared practical lessons on how meaningful innovation begins with asking better questions. He emphasized the value of rigorous feedback and designing “killer experiments” that actively challenge a theory before refining it further. He brought these principles to life through his team’s groundbreaking work restoring limb function in extremity amputees, particularly in the hand.

An inspiring and instructive session on how thoughtful curiosity, discipline, and persistence drive progress in surgery.
