Mid-December already?? Wild. Our staff will be leaving the office a tad early today for our holiday celebration, and it could not be more appropriate that the Just for Today meditation is The Joy of Sharing. It says:
“As we maintain our clean time and recovery, we find ourselves wanting to do for others the things that someone did for us, and happy that we can. […] We’ve been given much in our recovery. One of the few of these gifts is the privilege of sharing with others what’s been shared with us, with no expectation of reward. It’s a joy to find we have something that can be of use to others, and that joy is multiplied when we share it. Today we can do so, freely and gratefully.
Just for Today: I have been given so much in my recovery, and I am deeply grateful for it. I will take joy in being able to share it with others as freely as it was shared with me.”

This weekend, we encourage our community to take the time to multiply the joy in your life and the lives of those around you. This can look many different ways, and we hope that our list of sober-friendly events may provide some inspiration. As always, the Philly community is robust with opportunities for fun and connection! ✨Take care, stay well and we will see you on Monday ✨

Aaaaannnnd we made it! Another week of taking it one day at a time, of doing the next right thing, and we’re grateful for the community we get to spend those days with. For those of you celebrating Hanukkah, we hope the start of your holiday is filled with love and light. ✨🕎💜

This is truly just a sample of what is going on in Philly this weekend, but it’s safe to say the city is officially getting into the holiday spirit! There’s art (think seasonal fun like ice sculptures) and holiday markets in pretty much every corner of the city, a great way to support your local community and maybe find that last minute gift you’ve been looking for 👀 If something a little ~creepy~ is more your vibe, check out Merriment at the Mütter or the Nightmare Before Christmas GayBingo!

Regardless of how you decide to spend your weekend, stay safe and be well!

The Meditation for the Day from says:

“Having sympathy and compassion for all who are in temptation, a condition which we are sometimes in, we have a responsibility towards them. Sympathy always includes responsibility. Pity is useless because it does not have a remedy for the need. But wherever our sympathy goes, our responsibility goes too. When we are moved with compassion, we should go to the one in need and bind up his wounds as best we can.”

One of the many things that gets hammered home in recovery communities is to find your (sober) support system, your people, your community. And show up for them as you allow them to show up for you. Forming that community can be a challenge at times, and part of the reason we post sober-friendly events is to provide those in recovery with opportunities to find like-minded people and places to continue to forge already existing relationships.

Once again, Philly is busting at the seams with things to do and see, there is something for everyone. We hope to see you around town this weekend (or at least hear all about it on Monday)!

"Sometimes things which at the moment may be perceived as obstacles--and actually be obstacles, difficulties, or drawbacks--can in the long run result in some good end which would not have occurred if it had not been for the obstacle." -- Steve Allen

This weekend we hope that whatever challenges are presented to you, you are able make meaning from those challenges. Over the next few days, take the time to practice self-care, enjoy the sun (even if it's cold), slow down or stay busy, and tap into the Philly community and it's ample offerings.

You may have heard the saying before "Man plans and God laughs," a lesson that can feel painful to learn at times, but Just For Today takes it a step further in today's meditation and says "I will make plans, but I will not plan the result & I will trust in my Higher Power's loving care." Building that trust in a higher power, whatever that may look like for you, can be pivotal for one's recovery. Sometimes weekends can be hard, particularly in early sobriety, but it helps to know that there are safe spaces throughout the city outside of meetings and treatment.

This weekend may start a little early for some us, seeing as one of this weekend's events is actually tonight (Thursday), but we hope that wherever your plans bring you, you take care of yourself and stay well!

Did you realize that the overdose crisis extends beyond opioids? Shockingly, more than half of fatal overdoses involve a combination of opioids and stimulants. These cases often arise from fentanyl being pressed into counterfeit pills and deliberate polysubstance use.

As community advocates, we understand that Philadelphia has faced a shortage of high-quality treatment options for opioid and stimulant substance use disorder. Our mission is to transform this reality with innovative, empathetic, and clinically-proven treatment services. Find out more about our programs at SobrietyNow.org or reach out to us at 267-703-5199. ✨🎃Happy Halloweekend to all our ghouls! 👻✨

Today's Just For Today is called Living In The Present. It says, "For many of us, the past is like a bad dream. Our lives aren't the same any more, but we still have fleeting, highly charged emotional memories of a really uncomfortable past. The guilt, fear, and anger that once dominated us may spill into our new life, complicating our efforts to change and grow...Once the past loses its control over us, we are free to find new ways to live, ways that reflect who we truly are. Just for Today: I don't have to be controlled by my past. I will live this new day as the new person I am becoming."

What better time to focus on being in the present than spooky season? This weekend, whether you are focused on the spooky and scary, the fall and festive, or you're landing somewhere in between, we hope you make the most of your weekend!

Have fun, be well and stay safe!

When it comes to preventing youth substance use, early intervention is a game-changer. The longer we can delay substance use in adolescents, the lower their risk of addiction later in life.

Effective prevention:
✅ Addresses both risk and protective factors
✅ Works at individual, relationship, community, and societal levels
✅ Is sensitive to the social determinants of health
✅ Tailors to the unique needs of individuals and communities
✅ Upholds cultural competence
✅ Is sustainable over time

Join Sobriety Now in championing tailored, culturally competent, and sustainable prevention strategies to protect our youth. Visit SobrietyNow.org or call us at 267-703-5199 to learn more.
