Do you stretch?? As we get older, our toes may seem more difficult to reach. Stretching to reach them can take a lot more effort than it once did. Some folks might think that losing flexibility is a natural part of aging but it doesn't have to be that way.

Increased inflexibility can cause balance and posture issues.Tight hamstrings can cause a pelvic misalignment that makes your lower back hurt. A lack of flexibility might also make you prone to injury.

Springtime is the time to start an exercise program with stretching before and after your exercise. If you are unsure how to stretch or what to stretch, call our office at 215-342-6004 to make an appointment with Dr. Canty. She can get you moving toward a pain free exercise/stretching plan so you can enjoy your springtime activities.

For those of you who are watching the NBC broadcast of the 2018 Winter Olympics, beware of the suggestion made by the Today Show cast this morning. One of the topics of today's show was "KT tape" otherwise known as kinesiotape. I use it ALOT in my chiropractic practice. They suggested on the Today show that it works wonders if you apply it to your nose and cheeks to avoid windburn in the cold. Please don't apply kinesiotape to your nose and cheeks. You'll be stuck with a heavy adhesive on your nose and cheeks and won't be able to remove it with soap and water. 91% rubbing alcohol is what I use to remove any left over adhesive on my patients skin.

When is it okay to use heat to relieve pain? I'm asked this question often. An easy way to remember heat or ice is, for most people with chronic discomfort, moist heat is the choice. You can use moist heat for 15-20 minutes every one to two hours. If it's not working for you, try ice for 10 minutes on the area then follow immediately with moist heat. Do not use dry heat on any muscle with one exception. A dry heating pad (the old flannel covered pad) is okay to use for menstrual cramps but nothing else! Also, don't ever lie on a heating pad. Lie down on your abdomen and place the moist heating pad on your back. Lastly, never put heat on a new injury -- always ice and call my office for an appointment to have your injury treated.

For those of you who will be starting training for marathons/races, pace yourself and don't overdo it. Common sense, right? In the February 4, 2018 Philadelphia Inquirer, Health Section, Garrett Fitzgerald, MD, PhD, an NSAID (Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen) expert, discussed NSAID usage in chronic and acute situations. Basically, he recommended short term use for acute injuries. Be aware of gastro-intestinal side effects made worse when running the race -- no NSAIDS on race day. He also recommended a hot bath after the race.

My recommendations are to ice any area of ache/pain after training. After the race, a nice hot bath with three cups of epsom salts for at least 20 minutes then a nap. Also, schedule an appointment with me for treatment of spinal and joint stress before starting training, during training and after the race.

Have fun!

What's all the talk about Cupping?

If you've been watching the Olympics during the past week, you've most likely seen the purple/red circles on the shoulders and backs of many athletes. Those circles are caused by the vacuum effect of cupping which painlessly draws blood to that area to decrease muscle tightness/spasm.

Cupping has played a role in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. A residual circle of purple/red is a typical side effect. We use cupping along with Chiropractic adjustments for those patients who have severe muscle spasm/tightness. Typically, the bamboo cups are left in place for ten to twenty minutes. Cupping is not recommended for those persons on aspirin therapy or bloodthinners. Talk with Dr. Canty at 215-342-6004 for further information.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO AVOID SCIATICA

Sciatica is a burning, persistent pain which runs from your lower back through the buttock and down into the thigh often into the calf. It's an inflammation of a series of nerve roots in your low back. Although it can't always be prevented, there are simple strategies to avoid sciatica.

Aim to maintain proper posture and a healthy weight. It's also a good idea to avoid sitting for hours with your hips and knees at a 90 degree angle. If you have a desk job, get up and walk around frequently. Consider getting a standing desk.

If you need to move heavy objects, let your legs do the work. Bend with your knees and hips. Better yet, ask someone to share the load with you.

Exercising regularly is not only good for your health but your back too. When your back is strong, you may never/rarely experience sciatica. Visiting with Dr. Canty for additional suggestions and a chiropractic check up may also help prevent sciatica.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Planting flowers, raking leaves and grass and other backbreaking garden chores can not only cause pain but injury as well.

Here are some valuable tips to help keep your back healthy the next time you tackle those outdoor tasks:

- Keep the rake or shovel near your body to avoid injury.
Extending it away from you and then pulling sharply inward
could spell trouble for a vulnerable or older back.
- Try not to twist your torso.
- Bend at your knees and hips. Keep your spine straight with
shoulders back.
- Take frequent breaks. Some folks work nonstop for hours and
may feel fine yet wake up the next morning and can't move.

Remember, if your back starts to feel tired or stressed, be sure to stop, rest and visit Dr. Canty for quality chiropractic care. Regardless of the activity, taking proactive steps to keep your back strong and healthy is the best way to get the job done.
