As the Paralympic Games came to a close this weekend, we’re proud to celebrate how adaptive sports empower young survivors like our patient Colin.

At just 5 years old he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and treated at our Center where he underwent chemotherapy and a leg amputation, so the cancer would not spread. While Colin faced big challenges, he also discovered a new passion: sled hockey, a fast-paced adaptive sport featured in the Paralympics.

Today, he’s team captain for the Wings of Steel Sled Hockey Program and recently celebrated his third cancer survivorship appointment, continuing to inspire others on and off the ice. Keep shining bright, Colin! šŸ’™

Conor has been a CHOP patient since a few days after his birth. Over the years, he’s faced extraordinary medical challenges—including a diagnosis of very high-risk B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 16.

His treatment journey was long and complex, involving chemotherapy, life-threatening infections, a bone marrow transplant, and months in the hospital. Through it all, Conor’s resilience—and the teamwork of specialists, nurses, therapists and many others across CHOP—helped carry him forward.

Today, Conor continues to visit CHOP for follow-up care, and his joyful personality still shines. His family credits the collaborative care and compassion of his medical team with helping him survive and recover.

Read more about Conor’s remarkable journey, below.

The teamwork of the many CHOP doctors who collaborated on Connor’s care is the reason he overcame leukemia, his mom believes. Support from Cancer Center providers like nurse Allicia Kay bolstered Conor during his lengthy treatment for leukemia. It’s a two-hour drive on a good day from Conor’s ...

My Cause My Cleats is an NFL program where players choose a cause that is important to them and represent their chosen organization on custom designed cleats.

For the second consecutive year, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts chose CHOP and designed his cleats with the help of some of our patients. The game worn cleats are now up for auction to benefit CHOP.

Our patient Silas and his sister Zuri (who is also a CHOP patient) recently attended a Philadelphia Eagles game and were honored as Game Day MVPs! The sibling duo and their family enjoyed a special game day experience, including seeing their stories featured on the big screen.

Silas, who has an inoperable brain tumor, completed his 60-week chemotherapy treatment just in time for the game. He shared that it felt like his personal celebration.

In 2015, Chase lost his little brother, Shane, who was cared for at our Center, and our bereavement program helped the family during this difficult time.

"CHOP’s bereavement team taught me how to recognize, share, and manage the emotions I didn’t have words for. In art therapy, I used Polaroids, drawings, and stories to show how I was feeling."

When applying to colleges in the last year, Chase, a high school senior and a member of Abington Senior High School’s state championship soccer team, chose to center his personal essay on the grief that has shaped him and the sport of soccer that helped him navigate it.
