While gratitude may seem like a soft concept, research consistently shows that intentionally cultivating thankfulness can rewire your brain, reduce stress, and build emotional resilience. These factors all minimize your risk of relapsing. https://www.providencetreatment.com/addiction-blog/gratitude-and-relapse-prevention-a-clinical-perspective

“Heavy alcohol use is very strongly related to the decline and atrophy of your brain. There is a normal shrinkage that occurs with age, but alcohol can increase that – and the risk of dementia later in life.”
- Dr Jeevan Fernando

To give up drinking once seemed unthinkable – and when I finally made the leap, it didn’t go quite as expected

Understand the risk and get educated.

Does drinking alcohol increase the risk for pancreatic cancer? Researchers have long suspected it does, but the evidence has remained inconsistent. Now, a global study of more than two million people is firming up the case that a link exists: http://ms.spr.ly/6181sJohN

False Innocence syndrome.

The toxicity of cannabis, particularly its potential link to lung cancer, has long been underestimated. Mental health conditions and substance use often come with isolation—sometimes by choice, sometimes by circumstance. Rebuilding after that can feel overwhelming. But reconnecting is part of getting well.

This Social Wellness Month, here are 4 ways to strengthen connection after a period of withdrawal or lost relationships:

1. Start with one safe person. You don’t need a crowd—just someone who listens without judgment.
2. Join a group with purpose. Community support groups, volunteer teams, or recovery circles foster connection through shared goals.
3. Schedule social time like appointments. If it’s not on the calendar, it may not happen—treat connection as essential.
4. Practice presence, not performance. You don’t have to be “back to normal” to belong. Just show up as you are.

At Providence Treatment, social wellness is part of every care plan. Because recovery isn’t only about what you leave behind—it’s also about what you rebuild.

Addiction can look like success on the outside—providing for others, staying productive, keeping it together. But substance use is often the quietest form of self-neglect.

This International Self-Care Day we’re highlighting that real self-care is knowing when to pause, get help, and reclaim your wellbeing.

At Providence Treatment, self-care isn’t a bubble bath. It’s being brave and getting real clinical and life-saving treatment.
