As a yoga practitioner since 2001, mindfulness practitioner and a person who meditates, visiting India was an eye opener.
Yoga, meditation and mindfulness seemed like a luxury because after spending a week in the slums of India, yoga, meditation and mindfulness were not a priority for the women and children we worked with, because they have bigger problems to face - clean water, need for sanitary pads, women’s rights, education, clean living spaces, illnesses and family issues.
In the land where yoga originated from, only a few privileged ones practice yoga, mindfulness and meditation. **the British banned them**
Yoga and mindfulness and meditation in the USA seems to be a trend that brings a lot of cash to many companies and people without thinking about the country and it’s people who developed this ancient beautiful practice.
I fell in-love with India. Eating, dancing, living, singing and working with the locals in India helped me appreciate the true meaning of living in an oppressed society, the lack of equality and still find joy and fulfillment in the harsh reality of life.
The food, the people and the culture are very different from my Filipino American ways and being in India helped me appreciate the freedom we have in the west.
India is a beautiful country with very kind, friendly, calm and generous people who can drive by intuition and not by traffic laws 😆
Do not believe everything that you read in the news and do not negatively generalize this beautiful country because India is a beautiful country with beautiful people and culture.
They have a different view on women and how we should dress and what we can accomplish but there a many progress made to empower and educate and respect more women.
As much as I appreciate the fine things in life, it doesn’t bring me fulfillment; but experiences like volunteering in Indian slums and then touring the Indian temples, forts, and bazaars bring so much color, laughters, love and joy in life.
Volunteering abroad is not for everyone. But the brave ones who do come back with so much more than what they have given…
