My name is Kelli and I am the owner of Remedy & Relief Therapeutic Massage. I have always been fascinated by the human body and the many miracles it performs every day. Unfortunately, sometimes those miracles are a little harder to come by due to pain, stress, and injury. With every massage that I provide, I aim to decrease stress, provide long-lasting pain relief, and enhance the body's natural power when it comes to healing various injuries and conditions. Where the neck meets the shouldersโ€”one of my favorite areas to massage because thereโ€™s so much going on!

In addition to the well known trapezius muscle, there are a lot of other muscles in this area that tend to hold tension and have trigger points (including the levator scapula, semispinalis cervicis, spinalis cervicis, iliocostalis cervicis, etc.). When thereโ€™s time, I like to pay special attention to all of the muscles in this area because it results in a deeper state of relief. It also happens to be my favorite area to get massaged!

Itโ€™s totally normal to cry during your massage.

Sometimes a client will start to tear up and say something along the lines of, โ€œIโ€™m so sorry! I donโ€™t even know why Iโ€™m crying. Iโ€™m not sad and Iโ€™m not in pain.โ€ And my response always starts with, โ€œYou have absolutely nothing to apologize for!โ€

Emotional releases during a massage are commonโ€”whether youโ€™re laughing, crying, or just letting out a sigh of relief. It could be about something in particular, or about nothing at all.
โ €
Research isnโ€™t incredibly clear on why this happens, but many speculate that our unprocessed trauma or stress gets โ€œstoredโ€ not only in our subconscious mind and memory but throughout our physical being.
โ €
Regardless of why these emotional releases happen, itโ€™s important to know that the massage table will always be a safe space where you can feel whatever it is you need to feel. You donโ€™t have to apologize or try to explain yourself. And you can always take a break or end the session entirely if youโ€™re not comfortable.
โ €
So cry, laugh, sigh, or snoreโ€”whatever you need to do to fully reap the mind + body benefits of your massage!

The QL connects from the top of your hip bone and your lumbar spine to your last rib (swipe right for visual). It helps you hike your hip, bend to the side, and extend your spine. The QL is actually an abdominal muscle, but because it sits so deep in the abdomen it can be accessed from the back.

The natural light at my studio gives me the best kind of energy. My partner calls me a sunflower because of how much I crave sunshine. Especially on a cold winter day, the feeling of warmth that I get from stepping into a ray of sun is both calming and energizing to me. Anyone else?

The fact that sunlight triggers Vitamin D production in our skin is beyond cool to me (and research shows that many of us are deficient in Vitamin D*). Serotonin and melatonin production are also both affected by sunlight exposure.
โ €
The hormone Melatonin is produced when itโ€™s dark and stops when our eyes are exposed to daylight. When we expose ourselves to sunlight in the morning, our nocturnal melatonin production occurs sooner and we tend to fall asleep faster. Higher quality sleep, anyone? ๐Ÿ™‹
โ €
Research also suggests that sunlight exposure via our eyes can trigger our brain to release serotonin. Increased serotonin is associated with feeling happy, calm, and focusedโ€”a natural mood booster! Low serotonin is associated with a higher risk of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), among other things.

So in addition to the wonderful feeling of warmth it gives us, sunlight has some real health benefits. Get outside and soak up some sun. Your body needs it.

Sometimes Iโ€™d rather go for a walk or do a hard workout. Or get my adrenaline pumping by doing something adventurous.

Sometimes I want to do absolutely nothing and lay on the couch all day while sporadically taking naps.
โ €
