On October 29, 2025, Overbrook Environmental Education Center (OEEC) hosted the first Tree Care and Maintenance Training of the Fall 2025 season in partnership with the PHL Commerce Department’s Taking Care of Business (TCB) – Commercial Corridor Tree Partnership Program.

Staff members from ACANA, Achievability, Centennial Parkside CDC, Esperanza, and HACE came together to learn hands-on techniques in pruning, watering, fencing, and safety — all essential to caring for trees along Philadelphia’s commercial corridors.

This innovative workforce development initiative equips TCB Ambassadors with valuable green skills that strengthen both their professional growth and the neighborhoods they serve.

Special thanks to our instructors Vanessa Wimberly (OEEC), Marissa Donohue (Commerce Department), and Brian English (Green City Works) for leading the first of five fall training sessions.

Overbrook Environmental Education Center (OEEC), in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Office of Clean & Green, is engaged in a project to Reduce Illegal Dumping in West Philadelphia and citywide. In this first phase of work, we are evaluating the current illegal dumping and legal waste management baseline conditions, to assess root causes of illegal dumping, as well as potential interventions and solutions. To achieve these project objectives, we have been completing a series of stakeholder engagement and public education activities, including our unique “Trash Talkin’” Series.

OEEC’s Trash Talkin’ Series comes in 2 formats: (1) focus group sessions made up of small groups of stakeholders (typically, groups of about 15 participants); and (2) a radio series called Trash Talkin’ that we host the second Sunday of each month on WURD, as part of our broader public education efforts. In our radio program, we interview high-profile guests, who have expertise in various aspects of solid waste management and illegal dumping. We also have a recurring segment called “Did You Know?”..

In addition to our WURD-hosted Trash Talkin’ radio series, OEEC has been interviewed in other radio formats regarding our Illegal Dumping Reduction project. For example, here is a July 3, 2025 radio interview on iHeart Radio, with the widely respected host, Lorraine Ballard Morrill, on her popular Insight program, interviewing OEEC’s Executive Director, Jerome Shabazz, and Senior Project Coordinator, Mitchell Bormack, where we discuss the overall Illegal Dumping Reduction program and our Trash Talkin’ Series.
