✨Thankful for those who advocate to humanize rather than pathologize autism.
✨Thankful for those who listen to autistic voices and are committed to supporting unique differences.
✨Thankful for those who question the “effective” but harmful compliance-based techniques that were taught to you.
✨I am also thankful for those who are open-minded and thinking about how what you’ve always done, thought, or said may have been directly or inadvertently harmful to the autistic people in your life.
✨And I look forward to seeing more professionals and institutions adopt neurodiversity-affirming practices in 2022.
❤️HAPPY NEW YEAR!❤️

Behavior is communication. Is the child “non-compliant” as a result of forced-compliance in a non-preferred activity? Is the child dysregulated from their unique sensory experiences?
✨I will never call a child “non-compliant”, instead I’ll figure out what I can do differently to best support the child.
✨A strength-based, child-led approach that values connection over compliance is my recipe for speech therapy success.

Key points for teaching “mama” and “dada”:
⭐️Motor imitation comes before verbal imitation skills. Gross motor skills come before fine motor skills (talking). Taking time to strengthen those foundational skills (motor imitation, back and forth exchanges, joint attention) is important for later skills to emerge.
⭐️Imitation of sounds comes before imitation of words so encouraging play sounds is not only a fun way to encourage your child to be a communication risk-taker, it’s also a fun way to model those fine motor movements of the mouth.
⭐️Receptive language comes before expressive language. Modeling language in a simple, fun, pressure-free, and meaningful way allows your little one an opportunity to build connections between understanding and using language.

If you have concerns about your little one’s speech or language skills, reach out to your local speech-language pathologist.

Never underestimate the importance of prelinguistic skills. Before a child learns to communicate, prelinguistic (pre-language) skills must be mastered. Some of these skills include: responding to people in the environment, joint attention, non verbal imitation of gestures, and imitating sounds (silly sounds, environmental sounds)- all of these skills come before words emerge. I use sign language for “more” and “open” in this video and I pair the sign with the spoken word. Signing can help decrease frustration and boost communication skills. Play should be fun, pressure-free, and child-led! ❤️

I can’t believe my practice Speech Baby LLC turns 5 today! What a ride it’s been! What was once a very part-time biz has grown into a very full, full-time biz of working with wonderful families 🥰, guest speaking, mentoring SLPs, professional connections, and a soon-to-be podcast! ( 🎙coming soon!) I am grateful to my family and my friends for their support over these last 5 years! 🧠💬👄

Being in business for yourself is not always glamorous and it is challenging. You do not need to have everything all figured out; you just need to begin and see where it takes you. If you’re reading this and getting excited about the idea of having your own practice one day, I want you to know it is possible, and it all starts with 1 client. ❤️

Although many self-advocates and allies in the Autistic community are opposed to person-first language, it is important to respect (✨and not assume✨) an individual’s preferences for terminology. Unless told otherwise, I use identity-first language. Language is a powerful tool that can help shift societal attitudes towards autism. I listen to autistic voices.
