Penn Philosophy

Penn Philosophy Philosophy has been taught continuously in the University of Pennsylvania and its predecessors since

Philosophy has been taught at the University of Pennsylvania since 1755, when the bachelor of arts degree was first offered. The first teacher of philosophy was William Smith, Provost of the newly founded Academy of Philadelphia. At that time, logic, metaphysics, moral philosophy, and natural philosophy formed the core of the College curriculum. Today the department has 15 department faculty, 13 associated faculty from other departments, as well as many other visitors, postdoctoral researchers, and instructors. The department has particular research strengths in moral and political philosophy, philosophy of the life and social sciences, formal philosophical methods, and the history of philosophy. Our students come from around the world and have gone on to careers in law, medicine, natural and formal sciences, consulting, and, of course, philosophy.

University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Position: Tenure track Assistant Professor of Philosophy, starting July 1, 2019. Area of Specialization: Ethics. Two courses per semester, plus advising and committee work. Ph.D. expected at time of appointment. For our undergrad Philosophy students: Please consider submitting an essay to the ROSS PRIZE or the FLOWER PRIZE in philosophy. These annual prizes are awarded at graduation. The ROSS Prize is for an essay in the history of philosophy, while the Flower Prize may be awarded to an essay on any topic in Philosophy. Submissions must be the original work of an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, up to 25 pages in length (double-spaced). A submission may be a paper submitted for a course at Penn.

Instructions for submission:
· Send your submission as a PDF attachment to an email sent to the Undergraduate Chair in Philosophy, Susan Meyer.
· The Subject line of the email must include ‘ROSS PRIZE’ or ‘FLOWER PRIZE’.
· Submissions must be anonymous: that is, the PDF should not include your name, or any other identifying information.
· Submissions are due by 11:59 pm on Monday 27 March 2017.
