Let’s stop confusing optimism with happiness!

☀️ Optimism is simply a state of bring hopeful about the future. It has nothing to do with how you are feeling right now.

Yes, one of the side effects of depression is losing hope that things will get better.

However, recently I’ve noticed a trend in my office that clients are afraid to express their emotions our of fear that then they are being “negative” or “pessimistic”.

This is born out of the stigma that still exists around mental health. The stigma that says it is someone’s fault if they are struggling with anxiety, depression or any other mental health disorder or symptom.

We want to remind you that you are a HUMAN BEING who is a living, breathing, changing entity. You are going to have emotions come and go all day. This doesn’t mean you are pessimistic if you feel emotions other than happiness. We are not meant to live in a permanent state of happiness.

For today, allow yourself to be with your emotions. Let them come and go. And know that they have NOTHING to do with your hope for the future.

Consider this your sign to ask for help if you need it!

Like says, knowing your limits is key here.

When we push ourselves in hard seasons to “get it together” for the sake of looking independent, we widen the gap between us and those who don’t know we need help.

Prioritize yourself, and know we are here for you. 💕

This insight from is spot on 👏⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Just because something or someone feels comfortable and familiar to us doesn’t mean that it is what is best for us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Often we choose situations and people that we are familiar with because it is what we know and what makes us feel safe. Unfortunately, these often end the same way and/or repeat the same patterns as previous situations and relationships. Each time this pattern happens, we are usually left unhappy and unsure why this keeps happening.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It can be scary to make a choice that leads you down a path you are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with. If you routinely find yourself wondering why you choose the same partners, friendships, job environments, etc that result in you feeling unhappy, distraught, or dissatisfied - it may be time to do some self-reflection and examine what part you play. What is it about these people or places that draw you in to begin with? What about them makes you feel safe? What about them makes you feel upset or unhappy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The key to making any change in your life is first identifying and acknowledging the patterns you are consciously or unconsciously engaging in. The second is making a conscious, intentional choice in choosing differently next time as best you can.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Double tap if you needed this reminder as much as we did ❤️

We’re not saying this is easy, but sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to act opposite of an impulse to avoid addressing something— especially in therapy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
