Important HIPAA Update for Dental Practices 🦷📄
The ADA has updated its sample HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices to reflect new federal requirements related to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment records under 42 CFR Part 2.
🔔 What’s changing?
Beginning February 16, HIPAA-covered dental practices must include language in their Notice of Privacy Practices explaining how certain substance use disorder records may be used and disclosed.
These records carry heightened confidentiality protections under federal law and may be received by dental practices through patient history or care coordination.
🛡️ The updated notice clarifies:
How Part 2 records can be handled with general vs. specific patient consent
That these records generally cannot be used in legal proceedings without proper authorization or a qualifying court order
That certain information (SUD, HIV-related, genetic, mental health records) is subject to special protections
📌 What dentists should do now:
✔️ Update your Notice of Privacy Practices with the new ADA language
✔️ Provide it to new patients at intake
✔️ Make it available in-office and on your website
✔️ Train clinical and administrative staff on Part 2 confidentiality rules
This update does not change existing HIPAA obligations—but it reinforces the importance of safeguarding sensitive patient information and staying compliant.
Protecting privacy isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s a trust commitment to our patients.

For nearly 200 years, medicine and dentistry have operated in silos. The result?
❌ Many physicians aren’t trained to assess oral health
❌ Many dentists lack access to full medical context
❌ Millions of patients fall through the cracks
More than 70 million U.S. adults lack dental insurance, and research shows poor oral health is strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. In fact, people with oral health issues are 3x more likely to develop systemic disease.
Science is clear:
🦷 The mouth is not separate from the body.
🧠 Chronic gum inflammation can drive systemic inflammation.
🫀 Oral pathogens can enter the bloodstream and affect distant organs.
Encouragingly, change is happening—medical and dental records are beginning to merge, clinicians are cross-screening patients, and organizations are pushing for integrated education and care. But we don’t need to wait for a total system overhaul to act.
Collaboration, education, and routine referrals can start now.
Because ignoring the mouth isn’t just an oversight anymore—it’s a patient safety issue.

Why does Type 1 diabetes matter in dentistry? 🦷
For children and families living with Type 1 diabetes, treating low blood sugar always comes first—even in the middle of the night. Quick sugar corrections with juice, crackers, or candy are lifesaving, but they also mean teeth are frequently exposed to sugar and acid, sometimes without the chance to brush right away.
Over time, this can increase the risk of:
Cavities and enamel weakening
Gum inflammation and periodontal disease
Dry mouth (xerostomia), which reduces saliva’s natural protective effects
Dentistry plays an important role in caring for patients with Type 1 diabetes—not by blaming habits, but by understanding real-life needs and providing personalized prevention. This may include extra fluoride, more frequent dental visits, and guidance that fits into daily diabetes care.
When dental teams understand the lived experience of Type 1 diabetes, they can better support long-term oral and overall health.

Periodontal disease is more than a bacterial infection.
Lepp et al. (PNAS) found that methanogenic archaea were present only in diseased periodontal sites and increased with disease severity, suggesting a role in sustaining pathogenic microbial communities within periodontal pockets.
Understanding the full oral microbiome helps explain why periodontal disease can be persistent and complex.
