Jefferson Otolaryngology (and otolaryngologists nationally) have been very busy this past week! The annual meeting for the American Academy of Otolaryngology happened, and best of all, it was hosted in Philadelphia! We had a whole lot of exciting presentations, courses, and events laid out over the weekend and week. It was a great opportunity to share our research efforts as well as connect with fellow faculty and alumni.

Here are some highlights of the presentations and panels; click each picture to read about each:

When patients present with recurrent cancers, their treatment can be especially complex. To date, recurrent cancers are a global health burden and an unmet medical need. That’s why our physicians took a multi-disciplinary approach to this problem. This study determines the safety and efficacy of photoimmunotherapy in patients with heavily pretreated recurrent head and neck cancers.

This research was also initially presented at the 2019 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.

Our skillful surgeons are trained in multiple types of resections, and they continue to develop techniques and therapies to better treat their patients. In a recent study, the safety and benefit of intraoperative Cesium-131 brachytherapy was combined with surgical resection. For patients with resectable non-metastatic recurrent head and neck cancer, a therapy like this can alter the course of treatment, provide an alternative to radiation, and lessen adverse effects including osteoradionecrosis and wound infection.
