Every year, Studio 34 hosts a class on Thanksgiving to raise awareness and funds for Indigenous-led movements that protect land and water. Join Studio 34 senior yoga teacher Morgan Andrews for a 90-minute practice that includes a Land Acknowledgement, yoga practice, and meditation.

Indigenous Environmental Network was founded over 30 years ago by grassroots Indigenous peoples under the leadership of youth, elders, women, and traditional spiritual societies to stand up for our inherent rights to practice cultural and spiritual ways of life and to stop the destruction of our waters, lands, and territories. A huge takeaway from these mudra practices has come from seated spinal twists. All of these poses are founded by configurations of the legs and activated by distal actions of the arms to bring a person into the twist. But what happens when we take the arms away? In a simple cross-legged twist driven by one hand pulling against opposite knee while the other pushes into ground, can one bring those hands to center and stay in the twist? And what’s even holding us there when we do?

Knowing Ganesha as “Remover of Obstacles” is itself a bit of an obstacle🐘

In meditating on this Mudra, I don’t want to be sitting there thinking “I have this obstacle! Get it outta my way!”🐘

So the obstacle that Ganesha is truly presenting is to not focus on the obstacle at all🐘

CHIN MUDRA👌🏽can add direction and intention to a pose. Here, in Viparita Virabhadrasana (Reverse Warrior Pose), the the Mudra reaching over the back leg has components that inform the larger pose: Fingers spreading inspire side flexion of ribs while connection between thumb and forefinger activates shoulders to support the pose. There are also layers of meaning in this Mudra that apply to the core of yoga’s philosophy: Those three fingers are the Gunas (Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva, aka matter, energy, and light), and the union of the other two bring together Ātman (individual consciousness) and Brahman (universal consciousness). There’s a lot to unpack here, and we will be unpacking Sunday at 10AM!👌🏽
