Transition into crossed-thumb variation of Anjali from Garuda Mudra. Today we played with this a bit in practice for the next Anjali & Beyond class on Wednesday at 7PM! 🙏🏽🦅

GARUDA MUDRA (The Seal of the Eagle 🦅) is my go-to when a yoga teacher says, “Put your hands together.” Its hooked thumbs fit snugly into the jugular notch of the sternum, and the splayed fingers resting on collar bones encourage the rising of Ujjayi Breath into upper lungs. In poses, I teach Garuda Mudra with arms overhead to access sidebends and backbends. This Wednesday at 7PM, we will do a whole lot more as we explore the potential of Garuda Mudra! 🦅

ANJALI & BEYOND is a class series that uses the hand gestures of yoga as seeds from which we can grow other aspects of the practice. Join Morgan Andrews an any of 3 Sundays at 10AM and 2 Wednesdays at 7PM from Nov 2–16 at Studio 34 in West Philly. Sign up through MindBody to reserve your spot!

A new favorite entry into Valakhilyasana (deep lunge backbend, literally “Tiny Spirits Pose”) starts with a supportive Mudra! Viparita Anjali (slide #2 with hands behind back) traditionally appears in forward bands not because it facilitates them, but because it makes them harder. But Viparita Anjali does support deep backbends by expanding the chest, offering spinal length, and giving one’s back something to lean on. For a pose like Valakhilyasana, it also eases access to shoulder positions that often put the breaks on backbends. Excited to try this in Sunday’s first installment of Anjali & Beyond!

Malawians x Kapalbhati with a “sawing” Anjali Mudra helps with wrist strength/flexibility and core atunement to prep for Crow Pose. Try doing it every day for a week!

10/30/2025

Just started teaching this entry into Viparita Anjali Mudra (palms together behind the back) that articulates multiple joints of the arms:
1. As arms move from overhead to side to back planes of the body, shoulders rotate inward.
2. Elbows and wrists flex (palms toward forearms) to bring backs of hands together.
3. Forearms torque and unite palms, inverting wrist flexion into wrist extension (back of hands forearms).
4. A deeper bend of elbows eases up on the deep wrist stretch to send hands up the back and shoulders externally rotate, opening the chest.

Repeating this movement helps to articulate each joint and find gradual and greater depth in what many report to be a difficult Mudra. Once it’s more accessible, new challenges await in Parsvottanasana, Prasarita Padottanasana, Virabhadrasana III, and a slew of other pose variations that I’ll be posting here in the coming days!

My first time trying Viparita Anjali Mudra (hands behind the back in slide #2) in a Revolved Pigeon Pose. Didn’t exactly nail it, but maybe by Sunday’s Anjali Mudra class I’ll have earned my wings!

ANJALI is the Mudra that shows up (or is at least mentioned) most often in contemporary yoga. Etymologically the Anj- prefix denotes the mango seed-sized space inside of cupped palms that can hold an offering. In a secular practice, what we offer is up to each of us.

This Sunday, we’ll explore Anjali Mudra and how the offering of “Anj” can seed a plethora of whole-body yoga poses. Class starts at 10AM and runs 1 hour 45 mins. Use your Studio 34 membership or come at regular drop-in rate if $18.
