Sports betting has fundamentally reshaped modern fandom.

It has also introduced risks that many families are only beginning to recognize as harm becomes more visible in homes, relationships, and communities.

The Sports Betting Boom examines how gambling became embedded in sports culture, how normalization accelerated, and how the psychological and financial consequences are impacting individuals, families, and entire communities.

I am proud to support the work of Family and Friends of Gamblers (FFOG), which is featured in this VICE documentary and continues to elevate the voices of families living with gambling-related harm.

As gambling expands through mobile technology and constant access, public awareness and public health protections must keep pace.

Watch the full documentary to better understand why meaningful reform is urgently needed.

I’ll be joining America Right Now with Tom Basile on Newsmax this Saturday to discuss how modern sports betting is affecting individuals, families, and communities nationwide.

This is no longer a niche issue or a future concern. Gambling is now instant, constant, and engineered for addiction. The harms we’re seeing are the predictable result of an unregulated product scaled through apps without meaningful public health protections.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important national conversation.

Gambling disorder often develops quietly and over time. Many people don’t recognize the warning signs until real harm has already occurred.

Understanding how gambling addiction presents is an important first step toward earlier intervention, effective treatment, and meaningful prevention.

If this feels familiar for you or someone you care about, support is available.

I’m grateful to Roxbury Latin School for the opportunity to have an open, honest conversation with students, parents, and staff about online sports betting and public health.

These conversations matter, especially as gambling becomes more accessible, more normalized, and more aggressively promoted, without the necessary education or safeguards.

I appreciate the chance to engage directly with young people and families about risks, realities, and what safer policy should look like.

Research shows that having a family member with a gambling problem increases a person’s own risk, mirroring patterns long recognized in alcohol and substance use disorders. At the same time, strong family relationships can reduce harm and support recovery.

This is why prevention, education, and treatment must account for families, not just individuals.

If you or someone in your family is struggling, support and treatment matter. Learn more about counseling, prevention, and public health approaches at harrylevant.com.

An AP investigation details how sports betting pressures have reached NCAA basketball, drawing players into wagering schemes tied to rapid, high-frequency bets.

These developments highlight how modern betting products are structured for speed and volume, increasing exposure to harm, particularly for young adults in competitive environments with limited safeguards.

Public health regulation must address how gambling is marketed, how quickly bets can be placed, and how technology intensifies play. Without clear standards, risk continues to spread into spaces built around development and community.

This is reporting that policymakers need to have in mind as they evaluate sports betting policy.

Sports betting is entering family life earlier than ever.

Recent comments from Ben Affleck reflect what many parents are already encountering as gambling becomes normalized for young people, often without education, meaningful limits, or public health safeguards.

When a highly addictive product is embedded into everyday sports culture, exposure starts early, and harm follows quickly.

This is the kind of information policymakers need in front of them. Young people are encountering betting earlier and earlier, while protections around age checks, advertising, and product design are still lagging.

The SAFE Bet Act is the first comprehensive federal proposal to address the public health risks of sports betting.

It sets national standards for advertising, affordability, and the use of artificial intelligence–areas where harm has accelerated as gambling moved onto phones.

If public health is going to be taken seriously, policy must reflect it. Learn about the SAFE Bet Act and add your voice to the call for meaningful safeguards.

Online sports betting is no longer confined to policy papers and public health journals.

When widely known figures like Dave Ramsey speak publicly about gambling harm, it reflects how far this issue has entered the mainstream conversation. Regardless of background or perspective, the concern aligns with what families, clinicians, and researchers have been documenting for years.

It's time for a public health response to this crisis – recognizing a highly addictive product and responding with safeguards that match its real-world impact.

It takes courage to speak publicly about gambling addiction, especially in professional sports, where silence and stigma still dominate.

By sharing his experience, Kayshon Boutte puts language to something many people struggle to explain: how gambling can become isolating, consuming, and hard to escape in a world of constant access.

Stories like this matter. They help families recognize what’s happening. They help people struggling realize they are not alone. They shift the conversation away from blame and toward understanding.

This is how stigma breaks down and how prevention, treatment, and meaningful reform become possible.

Millions of Americans meet the criteria for compulsive gambling.

Only a small fraction ever receive help.

Stigma, silence, and limited access to care leave many people struggling alone. When harm is easy to create and recovery is hard to find, the gap only grows.

Addressing it requires awareness, accessible treatment, and public health protections that reflect the true scale of the problem.

These numbers are not abstract. They represent real people, real families, and real harm. Gambling addiction disproportionately affects young men, thrives online, and carries serious mental health consequences.

Awareness, prevention, and treatment are essential.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.
