Over the next 24 hours, I will be joining Action News, Nightline, and Good Morning America.

As gambling becomes faster, more accessible, and more deeply embedded into everyday life, the risks are increasing and the public health harm is becoming impossible to ignore.

I am grateful for the opportunity to bring the public health movement to regulate the gambling industry into the national spotlight.

The Public Health Advocacy Institute has filed a landmark lawsuit against DraftKings, FanDuel, Genius Sports, and the NFL.

This case is about holding the industry accountable for the harm it creates.

The complaint includes two men from Pennsylvania who allege that their exposure to sportsbook apps, particularly high-speed in-play micro-betting, led to severe gambling addiction. It also details how these platforms are structured to keep users betting continuously through high-frequency wagers and personalized digital engagement.

As access expands and betting becomes faster and more immersive, the risk of compulsive use increases and public health harm grows.

This case places the structure of modern gambling products and the industries profiting from them under legal scrutiny. Public health must come before profit.

I will be in Wichita on March 27th speaking at the Problem Gambling Annual Conference.

The expansion of gambling is a public health issue. It requires a response that directly addresses prevention, product design, and policy.

This conference brings together clinicians, policymakers, and advocates addressing gambling harm at both the individual and system level.

I had the opportunity to speak with CNN about the rapid expansion of sports betting and the role of data and AI in driving in-game wagering.

What is emerging is a system where leagues, sportsbooks, and technology partners are working together to increase engagement and betting frequency.

The NFL is not on the sidelines of this shift. It is participating in it through data partnerships that help power this model.

As betting becomes faster and more continuous, public health harm increases.

Professor Charles Livingstone is at the forefront of research examining how gambling products are structured to drive engagement, and how that contributes to public health harm.

His work reinforces that the current “responsible gambling” model is inadequate.

He will deliver the keynote at the Public Health Advocacy Institute’s symposium on April 24 in Boston, focusing on what a public health response requires in the era of online gambling.

This is a meaningful conversation about product design, regulation, and prevention, with one of the most respected voices in global gambling research.

The rapid expansion of online gambling demands a public health response.

On April 24 in Boston, the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University will host the United States' first gambling-focused international public health symposium putting research and advocacy into action.

This landmark event brings together international independent researchers, public health experts, and US federal and state policymakers to confront the state of online gambling and the urgent need for reform.

I am especially honored to join keynote speaker Professor Charles Livingstone, one of the world’s leading gambling researchers, whose work has helped expose the failure of so-called “responsible gambling” and the urgent need for real reform.

If you care about prevention, treatment, policy, research, or the people and families already living with this harm, I hope you will join us.

I will be speaking in Wichita on March 27 as the keynote speaker at the Problem Gambling Annual Conference.

As sports betting expands across the United States, gambling addiction must be addressed as a public health issue. Policy, prevention, and regulatory safeguards need to reflect the realities of a known addictive product.

I look forward to joining clinicians, policymakers, and advocates working to advance a public health response to gambling harm.

I am proud to support Senator John Keenan as the Massachusetts Senate takes an initial step toward advancing the Bettor Health Act.

The proposal would:
• Restrict prop bets and live in-game betting
• Limit sports betting advertising during broadcasts
• Strengthen affordability and consumer protections

Prop bets and live betting are among the fastest forms of wagering, designed for constant engagement. Sports betting is a known addictive product. When speed and volume increase, risk increases.

This legislation reflects a public health approach. Prevention and guardrails must be established before harm occurs, not after.

I recently joined Melissa Macillus on the Making Bets In A Burning House podcast for a thoughtful conversation about gambling reform.

I appreciate the opportunity to engage in a serious discussion about the rapidly accelerating crisis of modern gambling and the need for comprehensive public health reform, along with FFOG: the Families and Friends of Gamblers who will help to make that happen.

Grateful to Melissa and the team for creating space for this conversation. They’ve put a lot of work into their podcast, and every episode brings new insight to this important issue. Definitely worth a listen!

You can listen to Episode 34 and the rest of the Making Bets in a Burning House podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

A Massachusetts judge has allowed misrepresentation and false advertising claims against DraftKings to proceed.

The case centers on a “$1,000 deposit bonus” promotion that required customers to deposit $5,000 and wager $25,000 to qualify, with the bonus issued as non-withdrawable site credit.

The court dismissed one claim but denied most of DraftKings’ motion for summary judgment, meaning key allegations will now move forward in the legal process.

The question is whether the advertising had the capacity to mislead reasonable consumers into wagering far more than they understood.

Legalization requires transparency. Promotional structures and marketing practices should reflect the realities of a product that carries addiction risk.

Gambling addiction has nothing to do with money. Financial devastation is often what we see first. Missed mortgage payments. Mounting debt. Stolen funds. But those are symptoms.

The driving force is the way the product makes people feel. The dopamine surge. The chase. The action.

Modern gambling platforms place that stimulus directly in the palm of your hand, available at any moment.
