Today, August 20th, is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD). Founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition, SHAAD is a day that individuals, communities, and organizations can unite to call attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the South.

This year’s theme, “Power to the People!”, is meant to be a reminder of the immense power in one’s voice, one’s history, one’s joy, one’s dollar, and one’s vote.

Next week, on Tuesday, July 16th and Thursday, July 18th from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m., OHP will hold Part 1 and Part 2 of PA Counties Ryan White Part A Allocations. You MUST register for both meetings in order to participate in the entire process.

What are Allocations? These meetings are open to the public. This is your chance to decide how money is distributed between service categories - anywhere from Substance Use Services to Medical Care to Housing - for People Living With HIV (PLWH). Additionally, you can help break down barriers to care by brainstorming directives (letting us know how services should be provided differently).

The first meeting will be a chance to review the data, and in the second meeting, we will use what we know to make thoughtful, data-driven decisions. Use the following link to register:

Today, June 5th, “is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (HLTSAD). First observed in 2014, it’s a day to honor long-term survivors of HIV and raise awareness about their needs, issues, and journeys.”

“HIV Long-Term Survivors (HLTS) represent a diverse group of people, including:

-People diagnosed with HIV before the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy or HAART in 1996. They make up about 25% of all people living with HIV and AIDS. 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the U.S. That makes about 300,000 long-term survivors, defined as individuals who acquired HIV before 1996 and the introduction of HAART.
-People who have been living with HIV for over 10 years are also part of this group.
-People born with HIV or who acquired the virus as babies and have also lived with HIV for decades.”
