When choosing your parents next home.

Choosing a facility is one of the most painful choices you will ever make, not just for you but for your loved one. When my mother shared that she was moving into a senior living facility, I experienced relief and dread. I am in my early 30s, which is unique to have parents in their late 70s or 80s. I always feel like a child trapped in an adult's experiences. I feel like I am parenting my parents. And with my mom being with her life partner for 15 years, I officially have 3 to worry over.

The feeling of dread came from my over ten years of experience working in every department in a leadership role. I have seen just about the craziest, beautiful, and scary situations in senior living. I have been mad to tears many times working in this field. I get made over what I can control when keeping the residents I work with safe and cared for.

I have seen horrific neglect and care staff who cared deeply for people who caused them high stress levels for meager pay.

Mom and I needed this to happen. She had found a fantastic high-end senior living facility. Sure, the facility was beautiful, but what mattered was what was not showcased in the tour.

1.) Yes, looks matter. My mother's facility drips with elegant cuts and pomp. Everyone who you see looks like old money. While I was impressed by their taste and high standards, I have also worked at places with cash.

When looking at the facility's aesthetics, here are the questions to ask yourself. Are the spaces and furniture practiced to the demographic? Would this feel like an enjoyable place for your loved one to live? Are the residents allowed to use significant areas in the facility? Can your loved one go outside? How will this environment affect their quality of life?

Do you feel you are ready for senior living? These are 5 questions you need to ask the Marketing Director when taking a tour:

4.) How long has the E. D. been at the community? This tells you about the E. D.s impact and experience on leadership.

5.) When was the last building up date? How often does the company update the building?
