Unlike some elected officials, our great senator -- Jeff Merkley -- will hold a whole series of town halls across District 2 this month. Look for him in Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Sisters, Prineville and Madras on March 20-21.

YOU’RE INVITED! I’m headed to Klamath County for a public town hall conversation on Friday, March 20 at 2:30 PM and I’d love to hear from you!

Whether it’s fighting for solutions to the affordable housing crisis, creating living wage jobs that support families, working to bring down the cost of prescription drugs, or protecting our “We the People” democracy, hearing directly from Oregonians about the challenges they face and the issues they care most about shapes my work in the Senate.

Input from communities across Oregon has a big impact on legislation in D.C. Feedback and ideas from Oregonians were the basis for funding I secured for nearly 500 community-initiated projects around the state—direct, targeted investments in our communities.

These forums give folks around the county a chance to ask me questions, talk about federal policy, and let me know what’s working in your local community that we might want to bring to a national level. Advocating for Oregon in Congress is what I’m here for, and I hope to see you at a town hall this year. If you can’t make it this time, please know that I hold a public town hall for every county in Oregon every year—and you can always reach my team and me through the contact form on my website.

The Klamath County Town Hall will be held at:
Oregon Institute of Technology College Union Building – Crater Lake Complex
3201 Campus Dr., Klamath Falls, OR 97601
(Park in Parking Lot A and follow signage to College Union)

Visit my website for more information about my Klamath County Town Hall on 3/20, including location details and accommodations resources.

SPEAK UP – ON THE FUTURE OF BLM - BY MARCH 23
While we are bombarded with Trump’s latest hijinks, there is a powder keg about to be torched at the Bureau of Land Management. You should care – a lot. Over 50 percent of Jackson County and 16 million acres in the state of Oregon are public lands, most of it managed by the BLM.

Environmentalists and the people who live here have fought hard to protect Oregon’s forests, wildlife, water and ecosystems.. But that is now in jeopardy under Trump’s BLM. A new proposal plans to:

-- Reduce protections for nearly 2 million acres of public lands, quadrupling the harvest of previously protected old growth forests and other protected lands to 1 billion board feet a year,

-- Shrink logging buffers around rivers and streams to 25-100 feet, scientifically insufficient to protect endangered fish like coho salmon and steelhead.

-- Place logging above all other public lands uses, like recreation, wildlife habitat, and drinking water, in violation of the O&C Lands Act of 1937 and subsequent environmental laws and court rulings.

We are asking you to take two actions to help stop this. First, the BLM is asking for public comment through March 23. You can file your objections through the Federal Register, BLM’s NEPA Register, or the Oregon Wild website. You can also email direct to BLM_OR_Revision_Scoping@blm.gov or mail a letter or postcard to: Attention BLM OR930, 1220 SW 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204. Don’t hesitate to file objections using ALL of those methods, or hold a party with friends to do all those things together.

Second, Trump has nominated a terrible person to head the BLM. Steve Pearce is an extremist who has questioned the scientific evidence for climate change, made millions off of oil and gas projects, and has explicitly denounced Theodore Roosevelt for creating national parks and forests. His first confirmation hearing was last week, in front of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He will go before the whole Senate later this month.

Contact your senators to tell them we do not want an extremist like Steve Pearce mismanaging our public lands. Write letters to the editor to any and every publication in Oregon. Share this threat to our future with everyone you know. And, when it comes time for Pearce’s full confirmation hearing, let’s organize protests on every street corner across our state. Today is a good day to speak up.

Ah-bye-bye Kristi! We'd love to say it's been fun, but it hasn't.

We’re glad that Kristi Noem has been fired and she should face real accountability for DHS’ rampant violence.

But Noem’s firing doesn’t suddenly solve the crisis at DHS. Swapping personnel without changing course is not accountability — it’s a spin tactic. What we really need is structural change. Regardless of who Trump puts in charge of DHS, Congress needs to act immediately to protect our communities from the brutality of ICE and Border Patrol. The current violence and terror machine within DHS cannot be allowed to continue. We must tear this agency down to the studs.

Also, Trump can’t install a new DHS secretary via Truth Social. Any nominee must go through Senate confirmation and Congress must deliver real guardrails to protect our communities. Senators know what happens when they confirm a dangerous DHS secretary — any nominee can’t dodge public scrutiny.

This is a good time to contact your Members of Congress. Only kings use military might without support of the people and their representatives. The contact info is in the first link.

Democrats and a few Republicans are calling for curbing Trump's unilateral use of military power in Iran, despite previous such efforts failing to advance.

We are watching a president drag us toward another reckless war — without Congressional authorization — and we’re supposed to just shrug? No. Call your senators. Call Cliff Bentz. Say it clearly: I do not support the attack on Iran. At the same time, Trump’s BLM is moving to gut protections ...

From OPB: U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz, Oregon’s lone Republican in Congress, said by phone Saturday that members of Congress will be briefed on the situation in the coming days, although he was not sure exactly which day.

“I’m looking forward to the briefing,” Bentz said. “Until then, I really have no comment, because I don’t know the facts.”

Here, Mr. Congressman, let us help you: Donald Trump campaigned to stop wars, not start them. Yet this weekend, for the second time in as many months, he attacked a country without congressional approval without a plan for what happens next. He has started a dangerous, costly war in an unstable region, a war that the American people do not want. Congress needs to take back its power and stop this ignorant, reckless display of power.

You're welcome to use that in your next press release. You're welcome.

Multiple representatives and senators called for a vote in Congress to end further military action.

We wish our rep, Congressman Cliff Bentz, had this kind of courage -- or at least the understanding -- that we treating immigrants in our country as if they are less than human. Thanks Congresswoman Janelle Bynum.

Just calling it like I see it.
