About 38 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes. That number has more than doubled in the last 20 years. It’s the eighth-leading cause of death in the U.S., but one in five people suffering from it don’t know they have it.

Tyler and Jessica, who work on our Resource Team, delivered touching, compassionate care recently to two married patients. Tyler was taking care of the wife in our ICU and knew that her death was imminent, so he alerted Jessica, who was taking care of the husband in another wing of our Medical Center. Jessica quickly took the husband to the ICU in a wheelchair so he could have a final few minutes with his wife.

Tyler and Jessica stepped out and let the husband sit with his wife until she passed away. The husband expressed his gratitude for Tyler and Jessica’s coordination to make that time happen.

Tyler and Jessica join Jennifer, who works on our neurosciences intensive care unit, as our .

Jennifer was recently caring for a patient who’d been on the unit for a while and faced a long road to recovery after being on a ventilator. The patient just wanted to eat food, especially a Chick-fil-A sandwich. Jennifer promised the patient that once she was clear to eat foods, she would get her a sandwich.

When the patient was moved to rehabilitation, on her day off, Jennifer bought the patient the sandwich and went to the rehab hospital to sit and eat with her. It truly brightened the patient’s day.

About 3,600 babies are born each year in South Carolina to mothers who used opioids during pregnancy, and they face challenges. If you’re one of those mothers, we can help you. We know reaching out for guidance can feel distressing and overwhelming, but you and your baby do not have to face those challenges alone.

We’re partnering with Clemson University, Prisma Health and the South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund to provide a family-centered program for infants at risk for opioid withdrawal, Managing Abstinence in Newborns, or MAiN Babies SC.

Our MAiN Nurse Navigator is here to walk beside you and offer guidance, support, education and connections to services every step of the way. Simply call 864-870-7419 or email erika.massey@anmed.org to enroll or ask questions regarding MAiN. The Nurse Navigator will contact you for next steps, like your care plan, hospital plan, breastfeeding support, treatment and recovery, community resources, and ways your family can be involved.

It's a simple journey toward a healthy, supported future for you and your baby. Learn more at mainbabies.org.

Our Story

AnMed Health Cannon in Pickens, SC, is the result of a country doctor’s dream to bring medical care to the people of Pickens County. Beginning more than 50 years ago as a three-room clinic, AnMed Health Cannon today is a modern, high-tech facility where patients not only receive the best medical care, but also individual care, attention, and genuine concern that is so often overlooked in today’s health care arena. Dr. E. Gaine Cannon founded the first Cannon Memorial Hospital located on Pendleton Street and named it as a memorial to his father Dr. James Cannon. In 1949 the hospital grew to an 88-bed facility and was sold to community leaders who formed a non-profit organization. In 1982 a new hospital was built at its current location on W.G Acker Drive, and because of the growth of the community, the Outpatient Services building was added in 1991. Today, AnMed Health Cannon is a 55-bed facility with staff physicians who specialize in such areas as orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery, and rehab services. The hospital also added medical practices including family practices locations, surgical and orthopedics. Today, our hospital offers a full range of state-of-the-art medical technology, equipment, and services to meet the health care needs of the community. The expanded services of today’s hospital include a 24-hour Emergency Department, a full service laboratory, on site CT and MRI , physical therapy, critical care unit, sleep clinic, wellness programs for both children and adults, and diagnostic imaging for both inpatient and outpatient. We sponsor health fairs, flu clinics, CPR training, fitness classes, support groups, and many other community wellness services through our Wellness Center located at the hospital. In 2009, AnMed Health Cannon signed a partnership agreement with AnMed Health in Anderson, SC, to create a new healthcare network. The partnership became complete in 2016 when Cannon Memorial Hospital changed its name to AnMed Health Cannon. This agreement allows Cannon the opportunity to enhance patient care services and lower cost through economies of scale. The affiliation was intended to prepare our community hospital for the changes that will occur in the future with the healthcare delivery system. Click here to learn more about the services offered at AnMed Health – http://www.anmedhealth.org/ AnMed Health Cannon is built on a firm foundation of rich history, a vision for advanced health care and genuine compassion for the people of this community and will be able to enhance this tradition with our affiliation with AnMed Health.
