A man was rushed to our Emergency Department recently while suffering a major heart attack, but despite the best, tireless efforts, he could not be saved. Cardiologist Dr. John Meehan IV — who is the personal cardiologist for the man’s wife of nearly 54 years — delivered the sad news to the wife and daughter. He escorted them to see the patient, and he prayed with them. He stayed with them until the family had to leave.

He answered every question and offered help every way he could.

The wife reported that her pastor, who had arrived at the hospital, too, thought Dr. Meehan must have been related to them because he’d never seen a doctor be quite that kind and caring to a family before.

A week later, Dr. Meehan called the family just to say he was thinking of them.
For his care, he’s been named our Physician of the Quarter.

“Dr. Meehan is the embodiment of what it means to practice medicine as a calling, not just a profession,” the patient's daughter said. “His care went far beyond clinical excellence; it was deeply human. The kindness he showed my mother and me during the most heartbreaking time of our lives is something I will never forget… My family is forever grateful for Dr. Meehan and the incredible care we received.”

We are the first health system in the Carolinas to provide the TriVerity immune response test to patients. This innovative new diagnostic technology from Inflammatix improves patient outcomes by supporting earlier, more confident decision-making with suspected acute infection or sepsis. When symptoms are nonspecific and time matters, TriVerity can support care teams with additional actionable insight to help guide patient disposition and treatment decisions.

“Every hospital should have this test available to save lives,” said Sharon Robb, PhD, our supervisor of microbiology and molecular diagnostics.

“Our adoption of this test reflects our commitment to bringing leading edge innovation directly to the patients we serve,” said Dr. Brad Mock, vice president and chief physician executive. “This technology gives our clinical teams clearer, faster insight into a patient’s immune activity and risk of sepsis — allowing us to make more informed decisions and deliver truly personalized care.”

Our social workers are active members of our care team on the inpatient and outpatient sides. They help address barriers to discharge, arrange for services and support, advocate for patients’ self-determination, and provide special assistance in complex situations. And they do even more, from the emergency department to home health.

Here’s to them this ! Happy !

South Carolina’s measles outbreak has grown to 991 documented cases. The vast majority are in children age 17 and younger, with 452 in children ages 5 to 11. Our Dr. Brad Mock assures families that prevention has been proven to come through vaccination that was developed in 1963. Only 25 of the 991 cases in SC were in people known to be fully vaccinated.

Our teammate Ed had just arrived to service a printer at our new AnMed Oncology & Hematology practice recently when he witnessed a medical emergency nearby. A woman in a parked vehicle had suddenly stopped breathing. Ed helped her out of the car and onto the ground, and he initiated CPR. He continued chest compressions while an AED was retrieved and EMS arrived to take her to the Emergency Department.

He then humbly proceeded to finish his original task with the printer.

For his efforts, alongside Rebecca of our Care Coordination department, he’s been named one of our .

Rebecca went above and beyond for a patient who was wrapping up a long stay in the hospital. The patient had been abandoned by her family, and the patient would not participate in discharge planning, so Rebecca assumed those responsibilities — and more. She visited the patient daily. She gave her small items to provide a little comfort. She washed the patient’s clothes so the patient would have completely clean items when she was discharged to a nursing home.

Then she visited the patient in the nursing home to deliver care and show compassion well beyond our walls.

Today is , a time to spread awareness and understanding about lymphatic diseases. Simply put, lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid usually drained through the lymphatic system. It’s sometimes caused by cancer treatment.

Lisa, one of our patients, would have you know that lymphedema treatment is wonderfully beneficial, though it takes coordinated effort at home in conjunction with office care. She highly recommends the skilled, kind and compassionate team at AnMed Lymphedema Therapy, which facilitates therapy to treat all types of lymphatic dysfunction.

“They’re very professional, very nice,” she said. “What they do works; you just have to do your part, too. My arm (swelling) has come down so much!”

Our Story

AnMed Health Cannon in Pickens, SC, is the result of a country doctor’s dream to bring medical care to the people of Pickens County. Beginning more than 50 years ago as a three-room clinic, AnMed Health Cannon today is a modern, high-tech facility where patients not only receive the best medical care, but also individual care, attention, and genuine concern that is so often overlooked in today’s health care arena. Dr. E. Gaine Cannon founded the first Cannon Memorial Hospital located on Pendleton Street and named it as a memorial to his father Dr. James Cannon. In 1949 the hospital grew to an 88-bed facility and was sold to community leaders who formed a non-profit organization. In 1982 a new hospital was built at its current location on W.G Acker Drive, and because of the growth of the community, the Outpatient Services building was added in 1991. Today, AnMed Health Cannon is a 55-bed facility with staff physicians who specialize in such areas as orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery, and rehab services. The hospital also added medical practices including family practices locations, surgical and orthopedics. Today, our hospital offers a full range of state-of-the-art medical technology, equipment, and services to meet the health care needs of the community. The expanded services of today’s hospital include a 24-hour Emergency Department, a full service laboratory, on site CT and MRI , physical therapy, critical care unit, sleep clinic, wellness programs for both children and adults, and diagnostic imaging for both inpatient and outpatient. We sponsor health fairs, flu clinics, CPR training, fitness classes, support groups, and many other community wellness services through our Wellness Center located at the hospital. In 2009, AnMed Health Cannon signed a partnership agreement with AnMed Health in Anderson, SC, to create a new healthcare network. The partnership became complete in 2016 when Cannon Memorial Hospital changed its name to AnMed Health Cannon. This agreement allows Cannon the opportunity to enhance patient care services and lower cost through economies of scale. The affiliation was intended to prepare our community hospital for the changes that will occur in the future with the healthcare delivery system. Click here to learn more about the services offered at AnMed Health – http://www.anmedhealth.org/ AnMed Health Cannon is built on a firm foundation of rich history, a vision for advanced health care and genuine compassion for the people of this community and will be able to enhance this tradition with our affiliation with AnMed Health.
