Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Regional Interdependence

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy of the upper extremity, which is caused by increased pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the wrist with resulting symptoms of pain, numbness, and tingling in the thumb through third finger and thumb half of the fourth finger (palm-side). Traditionally, treatment guidelines for CTS have focused on therapies applied to the wrist. However, there is a growing understanding in the research community that CTS may be best viewed as a complex pain syndrome that requires a comprehensive sensory nervous system approach to achieve a satisfactory outcome for the patient.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy for Seniors with Low Back Pain

While low back pain can affect people of all ages, it’s particularly problematic for older adults and is one of the top three reasons they see a doctor. Despite this, low back pain among seniors often persists for longer than three months, and in the presence of multiple comorbidities (which is often the case with advancing age), low back pain may be under treated or mismanaged. While guidelines for the management of low back pain often emphasize conservative approaches first and foremost, older patients tend to be underrepresented in the studies used to formulate such recommendations. Let’s take a look at the current research on the utilization of spinal manipulative therapy—the primary form of treatment provided by doctors of chiropractic—for the management of low back pain in older adults.

What Is Tennis Leg?

The term tennis elbow is widely known because it’s a common malady associated with tennis (and more recently, pickleball), primarily due to the use of a back-hand stroke. For those who play racquet sports, there’s another common orthopedic condition that includes the word tennis: tennis leg.

Cervical Spinal Stenosis and Whiplash Injury

Cervical spinal stenosis (CSS) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spaces within the spine through which the spinal cord and the nerves pass. The condition becomes more common with age, affecting 6.8% of adults over age 50 and 9% of those over age 70. While it’s not unusual for a CSS patient to be asymptomatic, a sudden injury to neck tissues can compress, constrict, or injure the spinal cord (or associated nerves) and result in symptoms such as pain, numbness, and/or tingling along the course of that nerve that can affect physical function over time.

Loss of Cervical Lordosis and Its Connection to Headaches

According to a 2015 study, 85.7% of headache patients also experience neck pain, a percentage about 50% greater than the non-headache population. Additionally, several studies have shown that treatment to address musculoskeletal issues in the neck can reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of several types of headaches, including migraines. One of the most important aspects of the neck is the cervical spine, which serves to protect the spinal cord and support the head with its unique curved shape, also known as cervical lordosis.

Vitamin D and Healthy Aging

Vitamin D, also referred to as calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that is present in a few foods, is added to others, can be taken as a dietary supplement, and is produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight reach the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. While many people associate a lack of vitamin D with conditions like seasonal affective disorder or rickets, few know the benefits of vitamin D for healthy aging!

Posture and Neck Pain in the Younger Population

After low back pain, neck pain is the most common reason for a visit to a chiropractic office. There are many risk factors for neck pain including postural faults in the neck and upper torso. Let’s look at how common poor posture is among youths and what can be done to reduce the risk for neck pain in children and teens both inside and outside of the doctor’s office.

Managing Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are classified as a primary headache disorder. Migraines are three times more common among women, especially in their premenopausal years. While migraines are still not fully understood (meaning they are likely underdiagnosed and undertreated), the available data show they are the most debilitating type of headache and rank seventh among health conditions with respect to years lived with disability.

Daily Living with a Herniated Lumbar Disk

While disk herniations in the lumbar spine are fairly common and may resolve on their own or persist without symptoms, if a herniation places pressure on the spinal cord or nerves exiting the spine, the patient may experience radiating pain into one or both legs. While chiropractic care can help individuals with a herniated lumbar disk, patients often ask what they can do and what they should avoid between visits to facilitate the healing process.

Risk Factors for Chronic Whiplash

Whiplash describes a mechanism of injury that occurs following the sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head and neck that stretches its various soft tissues beyond their physiological limits leading to sprains, strains, tears, etc. The resulting cluster of symptoms is collectively known as whiplash associated disorders (WAD). Past research suggests that up to half of WAD patients will continue to experience chronic symptoms for up to a year or more following the initial injury event, which can place a heavy burden on the individual and their family. In recent years, much research has been conducted on uncovering why some patients experience a resolution of their symptoms and why some progress to chronic WAD.

Pronator Tunnel Syndrome Vs. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The median nerve originates from nerve roots (specifically C5-T1) that exit the cervical spine and then merge together in the brachial plexus in the neck and shoulder region traveling down the arm, through the wrist, and into the hand. Compression or restriction of the mobility of the median nerve anywhere along its course can result in the symptoms commonly associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), including numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the thumb and index, middle, and the thumb-side of the ring finger. So how do doctors of chiropractic differentiate between CTS where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist and another peripheral neuropathy like pronator tunnel syndrome (PTS) in which compression occurs as the nerve passes through the forearm, just below the elbow?

Snapping Hip Syndrome

While chronic hip pain can affect individuals of all ages and activity levels, 30-40% of those who have a history of playing sports and 12-15% of adults over age 60 may develop the condition. Although hip pain can result in a variety of diagnoses, a common form is coxa saltans, or snapping hip syndrome (SHS). This variety of hip pain is characterized by an audible or palpable snap of the hip joint, which can occur on one side or both hips, be painful or painless, and may not always have an obvious or knowable cause.
