✨ There is no clear path we can follow in order to change our lives radically for the better, but all of our great contemplative traditions centered on human transformation work with the ancient understanding that what we want and desire at the deepest level must already exist within us for us to be able to recognize its essence in the outer world.

The first door on this path is always, to our dismay, the door of our own seemingly irredeemably troubled heart -our own reluctance for real freedom and happiness. But what seems like a troubled heart is only what is essential within us trying to well up through a defended and fearful surface. What is loving in us, and what is experienced as love in us by others, arises from turning that emerging spring of what only seems like troubled reluctance into a channel of attention and intention toward our world and those who inhabit it.

There is no easy path because there is no sincere path without its own invitation to heartbreak, but it is through this very doorway of heartbreak that we come to learn what we really care about and how we are willing to risk ourselves bravely and visibly through that care. Through learning a faith in our own troubled and reluctant way, we learn it’s inverse, the untroubled and enthusiastic energies that lie at our rested center. It is there that the heart broken heart comes at last to a heartfelt rest – a rest and a foundation from which we can shape a more generous and understanding presence: better for us and much much better for our world ✨
