There are 4 main types of skin cancer.

Basal Cell Carcinoma: Basal cells are the round cells found at the bottom of the epidermis that produce new skin cells. Most often forming around the head or neck. Basal cell carcinoma is mostly caused by UV ray exposure and grows slowly. Most skin cancers form from basal cells.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The second most common form of skin cancer, squamous cells are flat, scale like cells that sit at the surface of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is commonly found on the lips, inside of the mouth, and on scar tissue. Sun exposure is also the main cause of this type of cancer.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma: Merkel cells are found at the top layer of the skin, often near nerve endings. Merkel cell carcinoma is rare but aggressive often appearing as flesh colored, or bluish red nodule, most commonly on your face, neck, or head. Merkel cell carcinoma can grow fast and spread quickly to other parts of the body.

Melanoma: Melanoma starts in melanocytes, scattered cells where the epidermis meets the dermis. Melanoma accounts for 1% of skin cancers but is the most serious form. Melanoma grows quickly and can spread to any organ.
