March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! 💛

So many of the children we work with every day here at Golden live with some type of developmental disability, all of which are just as unique as each child themselves. In honor of February being National Children’s Dental Health Month, we wanted to take a moment to share some ways that we like to address teeth brushing skills in OT! 🦷🪥

Aside from addressing the oral sensory aspect of brushing, we love playing with our dentist kit and brushing/flossing/picking out the playdough cavities! However if you don’t have one of those at home, you can print a picture of teeth, laminate it/place it in a sheet protector, and then use dry erase markers and a tooth brush to draw cavities and “brush” to erase them! ✨

We know this time of year is getting BUSY! Between after school clubs and games, practices, meetings, and more it can get overwhelming. Top it off with having a child who may need extra help and support, and you can find yourself in the middle of a meltdown. 🤯

Don’t forget that Morgan and Katelyn here at Golden offer parent coaching sessions! This is a great fit for someone who suspects their child needs OT services, but does not currently have time for weekly appointments or is on a waitlist for services and needs help NOW (just a few examples- anyone can book a coaching session)! ✨🛝🧩👀🌀🖍️

Today we are learning about the Palmar Reflex! 👌🏼

This reflex is important to help our infants learn how to begin grasping, but if it remains retained it can cause a variety of difficulties with fine motor skills that our children need as they continue to learn and grow.

Happy Monday! 💛

While it’s still a bit chilly outside in the River Region, we can get a taste of spring and summer at home by making our own sand dollar button boards! ☀️

This is a craft that does require more help from an adult, but can help our children practice buttoning/unbuttoning buttons of all different sizes. 👕

Did you know you can target all kinds of self-care tasks through play?? 🧦👕🫟🍽️🪢👟

Aside from practicing self-care activities, we also need to work on developing those underlying skills that build up to performing them! What better way to do that other than through our children’s favorite way to learn- through play activities! Dress up, tying up toys with strings and pipe cleaners, and even getting messy (and afterwards cleaning it up) can all target different skills we need to help our kids be successful in learning how to dress, complete hygiene tasks, use eating utensils, and much more. ✨
