Today we’re sharing a few thoughts as we begin to celebrate OT Month!

Occupational therapy is so much more than people think.

Most people’s first reaction usually is something along the lines of, “oh you just work on fine motor, right?”

While it’s true, fine motor is definitely a skill area that is necessary and that we do target, that isn’t all we are limited to.

OT is the sensory regulation it takes to get a child in the right space to even begin to feel safe enough to learn new skills and try hard things. It’s uncovering the million piece puzzle that is each unique child- their abilities, personalities, dreams, and motivations, despite the diagnosis. It’s using clinical reasoning to deep dive into sensory, emotional, fine/gross/visual/ocular motor, executive functioning, processing, and so many more skills to see how they all may or may not be working together and how they impact the other.

OT is the hours and intentionality it takes to get to know each child and their family to learn what strategies, activities, and supports work best for them.

It’s that feeling of overwhelming excitement when the child you work with has a win that week (no matter how big or small), and the steadfast encouragement when they have harder days.

It’s the constant looking ahead to see where progress is headed, although it doesn’t always seem linear. It’s the replaying of sessions to analyze what you could have possibly done differently, and how to implement those changes in the future.

It’s the growth you admire in your children and their families, as well as the growth you experience yourself as you push yourself to learn more and try new strategies. Growth to be more creative, more patient, more intentional, and more in so many ways to help your patients feel safe, loved, and confident.

It’s realizing that these sweet, small humans are incredibly multi-dimensional and deserve care that truly is holistic.

So yes, OT is fine motor, but also so much more. We are grateful and truly blessed to be a part of this field and want each and every child and family that we have had the privilege of working with that YOU are the best part of Golden Pediatric Therapy. 💛

Like Barbie, we always joke that we come with lots of accessories (if you have ever seen us carrying our yellow therapy bags, you know we do not ever pack lightly)! ✂️🚂🧸🧩🖍️🎾🛹🎨🎯⏰🔫

What’s your favorite therapy “accessory” you love to see your OT bring into sessions? Lately we have been loving incorporating plastic Easter eggs and egg dipper “scissors”! 🥚🐣✂️💛

(Also, I think we definitely need Miss Morgan and Miss Katelyn edition Barbie’s! 💁🏼‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️✨)

Happy Monday! 💛

Today we’re taking a second to give another view point of the “wait and see” approach. Of course we know that not all children develop and hit their milestones at the same time. We also know that they all have different ways of communicating and expressing their needs, which can sometimes result in seeing lots of different behaviors and reactions. Sometimes, it’s definitely okay to wait a few months to see if something changes, but more often than not it’s more beneficial to go ahead and voice your concerns to your healthcare provider and even schedule a screening by a professional that can offer more insight into the specific areas of development.

Think of it this way, if the provider does not find anything to worry about, you can have a better peace of mind! If they do find concerns, you will have your child set on a path to gain the skills they need sooner rather than later!

If you are concerned with your child’s development in the areas of gross and/or fine motor, sensory processing, visual motor and coordination, feeding, reflex integration, regulation, or executive functioning, reach out to us to schedule your screen!

Pinch us, because we feel so LUCKY that we get to work with some awesome kiddos! 🤏🏽🍀

Making some cute will leprechaun catcher crowns (crowns with gold coins attached of course- what better way to do it 👏🏼) last week was a perfect way to target scissor skills, counting and writing numbers, and even spacing and gluing the coins we made! 🪙👑✂️

Let us know if you make one and are able to catch a silly leprechaun today! 🍀

With our friends headed into Spring Break over the next few weeks, we wanted to give some fun activity recommendations to continue to promote sensory, fine and gross motor, visual and ocular motor, and praxis skills!

We hope everyone has a fun and safe break whether you are traveling or staying around town! Let us know if you try any of these things. 💐🐚🪏🏖️🏡🚙

Thankful for each and every one of our families and for the encouragement they share with us throughout our time working with them! Our children and their families are easily the best part of Golden - it is a privilege to be a part of each and every village! 💛

(And no, it’s not a typo…we have a few families with the last name starting with the letter “H” ✨)

We are wrapping up our primitive reflex series today with the Moro Reflex! 💥

This reflex, also known as the startle reflex, can contribute to emotional and self-regulation difficulties if it is not integrated. Thankfully, we can use a series of exercises to help, notably our favorite starfish/popcorn movements (which is exactly as it sounds- while sitting, stretching your arms and legs out like a starfish and then curling them in towards your body like a kernel of popcorn)! ⭐️🍿

Working hard and playing even harder! Watch this sweet friend working hard on his hand-eye coordination and enjoy those sweet giggles from a job well done! 🫶🏼⚾️👀
