Today we’re sharing a few thoughts as we begin to celebrate OT Month!
Occupational therapy is so much more than people think.
Most people’s first reaction usually is something along the lines of, “oh you just work on fine motor, right?”
While it’s true, fine motor is definitely a skill area that is necessary and that we do target, that isn’t all we are limited to.
OT is the sensory regulation it takes to get a child in the right space to even begin to feel safe enough to learn new skills and try hard things. It’s uncovering the million piece puzzle that is each unique child- their abilities, personalities, dreams, and motivations, despite the diagnosis. It’s using clinical reasoning to deep dive into sensory, emotional, fine/gross/visual/ocular motor, executive functioning, processing, and so many more skills to see how they all may or may not be working together and how they impact the other.
OT is the hours and intentionality it takes to get to know each child and their family to learn what strategies, activities, and supports work best for them.
It’s that feeling of overwhelming excitement when the child you work with has a win that week (no matter how big or small), and the steadfast encouragement when they have harder days.
It’s the constant looking ahead to see where progress is headed, although it doesn’t always seem linear. It’s the replaying of sessions to analyze what you could have possibly done differently, and how to implement those changes in the future.
It’s the growth you admire in your children and their families, as well as the growth you experience yourself as you push yourself to learn more and try new strategies. Growth to be more creative, more patient, more intentional, and more in so many ways to help your patients feel safe, loved, and confident.
It’s realizing that these sweet, small humans are incredibly multi-dimensional and deserve care that truly is holistic.
So yes, OT is fine motor, but also so much more. We are grateful and truly blessed to be a part of this field and want each and every child and family that we have had the privilege of working with that YOU are the best part of Golden Pediatric Therapy. 💛
