“Medication-assisted treatment” (or MAT) combines Suboxone (or a similar medication containing buprenorphine) with counseling and behavioral therapy help patients overcome opioid dependence.

Buprenorphine is an agonist-antagonist opioid type medication that attaches to the op**te receptors and significantly reduces or even eliminates cravings.

Patients who are tolerant to opioids generally will feel no significant sedation or intoxication with buprenorphine. For this reason, patients can usually return to normal productive life very rapidly after their initial detoxification.
