π October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month π
A time to raise awareness, honor survivors, and a reminder to take charge of our health β because early detection saves lives.
π©Ί Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines:
βοΈ Age 40: Begin annual mammograms (for women at average risk)
βοΈ Ten years earlier than the earliest diagnosis in your family (If your grandma was diagnosed at age 40, you would begin breast screening at age 30).
π Talk to your doctor about your personal risk factors (like family history) to determine if you should begin screening earlier
𧲠What About Breast MRI?
While not for everyone, breast MRI can be a life-saving screening tool for women at higher risk, and itβs used in addition to mammograms.
β
You may need a yearly breast MRI if:
-You have a hereditary cancer mutation increasing your risk of breast cancer.
-A close relative has the mutation and you haven't been tested
-Your lifetime breast cancer risk is 20β25% or higher (based on risk models)
-You had radiation to the chest between ages 10β30
-Dense breast tissue
