There are different types of cataracts that may develop in your eye. The most common form is a nuclear cataract, which forms in the center of the lens. You may notice nearsightedness at first, and slowly the lens will turn yellower and cloudier.

Other types include:
- Cortical cataracts, which usually begin as white-ish “streaks” forming near the outer edge of the lens and growing toward the center
- Congenital cataracts, which are present at birth and can occur in a variety of configurations
- Trauma-induced cataracts - these can form anywhere on the lens and often develop into a “flower-petal” shape
- Posterior subcapsular cataracts develop at the back surface of the lens unlike other forms of cataracts. These tend to develop faster than other cataracts, so they are important to catch early.

According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to remove cataracts.

The following will put you at a higher risk of developing a cataract:
- Age
- Inflammation in the eye
- Family history of cataracts
- Long-term steroid use
- Smoking
- Years of excessive UV exposure
- Eye injuries
- Eye diseases
- Other health diseases or conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure

Age is the greatest risk factor for cataracts. They often start developing between age 40 and 50 as the proteins in the lens of your eye may begin to break down. They will then clump and form a cloudy spot within your vision. Vision loss from cataracts is typically slow, but some may see rapid deterioration.

Have you noticed your vision getting more cloudy or blurry? You may be developing a cataract. Cataracts are very common as you get older, especially past age 40.

Other symptoms of cataracts include:
- Poorer vision at night
- Colors appearing more faded
- Seeing a "halo" around lights
- Seeing double in one eye
- Lights start seeming too bright and uncomfortable
- Needing increasingly brighter light to read

If you begin to notice any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment right away. Early changes, such as changing your prescription, can make cataracts much more manageable.

A study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that 65% of people injured by fireworks are bystanders. You are at risk of injury even if you aren't the one setting off the fireworks.

To ensure the safety of you and your family, watch professional fireworks displays from at least 500 feet away and always wear protective eyewear.

Prioritizing safety while watching fireworks can help prevent serious eye injuries and loss of vision.

According to the AAO, Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars annually on consumer fireworks, which cause more than 9,000 injuries a year.

Fireworks are very dangerous - they can blind you or your loved ones. There is no completely safe way for nonprofessionals to light fireworks. The best way to protect yours and your family's vision is to leave fireworks to the professionals!

Wearing protective eyewear is also recommended - this will ensure you have as much defense as possible in case of accidents. Safety glasses or goggles are a great choice, especially if you are going to be close to the action.

At Bright Eyes, we use the MiSight® contact lenses to treat myopia. These are daily disposable soft contacts designed to slow down the progression of nearsightedness for children.

It has been shown that, on average, children who wear MiSight 1-day contact lenses progressed less than -1.00D over 6 years. MiSight lenses are the only FDA-approved for children from 8 to 12, and research suggests that they can be beneficial up until age 15.

These lenses are made to be comfortable for children. If your child is diagnosed with myopia, they are a great option to consider!
