Empowered healthy living! You’ve always had the power. 💛

The term “optimal health” doesn’t just mean there is a lack of disease, it means the body is thriving as a whole. ⁣

This is an underlying goal of Functional Medicine—one I strive for with every one of my patients.⁣

But how do we reach optimal health? What scientifically proven steps can we take to optimize our bodies to function at their highest levels? ⁣

We can do this by eating a healthy diet that consists of non-starchy vegetables, clean protein, and healthy fats. Also by taking essential supplements such as omega-3, b complex, vitamin D, and magnesium. By exercising and making time to engage in active relaxation such as meditation, deep breathing, etc. ⁣

The body never lies. Honor her wisdom. 💜

The body never lies. Honor her wisdom. 💜

From the time we’re little we’re taught to ignore our bodies and feelings, cutting us off from a powerful information source - our inner knowing. From a shift in heart rate, an irregular period, or feeling wary about something, your body provides continual feedback on your inner and outer ecosystems. When you become familiar with these subtle shifts and cues, like a 6th sense, you become deeply attuned to yourself. Too often we don’t hear the messages until they’re too loud to ignore, i.e., as symptoms.

I’ve been living with my inner sense/body knowing as my North Star for nearly 40 years. It’s led me on a powerful and profoundly empowered journey through my menstrual cycles, pregnancies and births, and now into menopause, as well as guided the choices I’ve made. It’s allowed me to trust my body and live as my own authority on myself.

I invite you to make 2021 the year in which you deepen your understanding of your body language, get curious, and pump up the volume on your inner knowing by making it a daily practice to listen - and answer your body’s requests for nourishment, care, or a change.

Here’s a simple practice to get you started. Tune in for one minute each day and ask yourself these 3 questions:
🌟 How am I feeling right now?
🌟 What do I need more of?
🌟 What do I need less of?

The answers can offer deep insight into what’s going well for you, what’s out of balance, where you need to nourish. If 2020 taught us anything, slowing down and focusing on what’s important is essential to our well-being. Physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, creative health are interrelated. When something is right or when we are in harmony, we also know it through a sense of ease, wellness, or “rightness” that lets us know that all is copasetic. Relaxed muscles. Slow, steady heartbeat. Mental clarity. Regular cycles. Feeling balanced.

This year, we can reclaim listening to and trusting how and what we feel. How has listening trusting yourself/your body knowing served you in some aspect of your life? How are you hoping it will guide you in the year to come?

As a 50+ woman with a history of Alzheimer's in my family....this information is relevant. Dr. Mark Hyman always has a great way of educating and sharing information. Hope you find this useful.

The truth is, dementia is a very big problem that’s becoming bigger every day.⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
What’s the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes? ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Well, new research shows insulin resistance, or what I call diabesity (from eating too many carbs and sugar and not enough fat) is one of the major factors that starts the brain-damage cascade, which robs the memory of over half the people in their 80s, leading to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Here’s the bad news/good news. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Eating sugar and refined carbs can cause pre-dementia and dementia. But cutting out the sugar and refined carbs and adding lots of fat can prevent, and even reverse, pre-dementia and early dementia. Sugar causes pre-diabetes and diabetes, which often leads to significant memory loss. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Chronic stress takes a toll on your body and brain. Stress shrinks the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain. So, find your pause button every day and make time for some stress relief. Relaxation isn’t a luxury if you want to prevent or reverse dementia. Whether that involves deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, find something that helps you calm down. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Lack of sleep can cause impaired brain function, leading to CRAFT syndrome, which stands for “can’t remember a _____ thing.” Studies show poor sleep becomes a risk factor for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Aim for at least 8 hours of quality sleep every night.⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
We now know that physical activity can prevent and even slow down the progression of cognitive decline and brain diseases like dementia. Even a 30-minute walk can help. More active readers might want to incorporate high-intensity interval training or weight lifting.

Let’s all stop “shoulding” on ourselves....and give ourselves a big heaping dose of grace. 💜💜💜

The earlier in the day the better. But anytime of day is better than no time. Daily exercise = Aging Well!

The earlier in the day the better. But anytime of day is better than no time. Daily exercise = Aging Well!

Your brain on exercise performs so much better. Exercise improves memory, learning, and concentration. Vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. Exercise creates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDMF), which is basically miracle grow for your brain. When you exercise, your brain becomes more elastic. Exercise also helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.⁣

In fact, if I could put something in a pill that would reverse almost every chronic disease, it would be exercise. If exercise could be put in a pill, it would be the biggest blockbuster medication of all time. ⁣

Unfortunately, nearly half of Americans live a sedentary lifestyle and 88 percent don’t get enough exercise. No wonder we have an epidemic of broken brains and broken bodies!⁣

If you’re having trouble getting started, you can fit in exercise with these three strategies:⁣

Make it a priority and think ahead. Human nature dictates that we are more likely to exercise if we’ve made it easy for ourselves. Get your sneakers out of the closet, choose whatever clothing you’ll be most comfortable in for walking, and make sure it’s clean and accessible. Let’s get the obstacle of preparation out of the way so you’re ready to lace up and go.⁣

Do it first thing in the morning. We all know how easily pushing exercise to the back burner and subsequently neglecting it can become. Do your daily exercise first thing in the morning to jump-start your metabolism and set your day on the right course.⁣

Make it fun. Getting into great shape doesn’t mean hours at the gym, plodding along on elliptical machines or suffering through classes led by punishing drill-sergeant instructors. While I hate to exercise, I love to play. I find different things that keep me fit. I encourage you to explore all the fun things you may enjoy and safe exercise for those times when you just can’t find a way to play on your own or with someone else. Vary up your routine and above all, make it fun.⁣
