"A normal physiologic labor and birth are powered by the
innate human capacity of the woman and fetus.
This birth is more likely to be safe and healthy because no
unnecessary interventions disrupt normal physiologic processes.
Some women and/or fetuses will develop complications that
warrant medical attention to assure safe and healthy outcomes.
However, supporting the normal physiologic processes of
labor and birth, even in the presence of such complications,
has the potential to enhance best outcomes for the mother
and infant.” ACNM: Birthtools.org

Birth is just the start of growing a healthy family!

During Midwife Week, know how much we appreciate all that you do to support physiologic birth & respectful care of birthing families. Such precious babies! Our clients are awesome, & we love working with you:) We have some really great back up providers, & we couldn't do it without them. Sending love and intention like incense rising into the heavens, that every woman and family in NC will have access to midwife care when she needs it most! And so it is!!

I think that New Dawn Midwifery's (love you, Jan!!) model of co-care with CPM's and CNM's is a wonderful way to provide Homebirth care. Now we are just stuck in crisis mode all the time --with too few midwives of every sort!! I believe the SAVE Act can nudge us to improve care in rural and underserved areas, and help increase homebirth care. I believe homebirth midwives were left out of the first midwife law, and we need to fix that. If every homebirth CNM hires a CPM, we can make great strides in taking homebirth excellence to all families requesting it, while continuing to work on full licensure for CPM's. If that sounds like another cop-out, I can only say that for 20 years I have been exhausted by the stonewalling in the General Assembly on allowing midwives to practice with full practice authority. The status quo is not helping us
After my last post, you will be interested in this: I just received an email update from the coalition of my professional organization:

"We have spectacular breaking news to report! A milestone that has been frustratingly out of reach for nearly a decade has finally been achieved.

Just moments ago, the NC Senate Health Committee – followed immediately by the NC Senate Finance Committee – voted to advance an omnibus healthcare bill (HB149) that contains the language of the SAVE Act in its entirety. The bill should soon be on its way to the Senate floor for an official chamber vote. Once there, if it passes, it will head over to the House of Representatives.

Full practice authority for Advanced Practice RNs isn’t just a bill that’s been introduced…it is now officially on the move. This is gigantic news!!. NCNA made this a priority many legislative sessions ago, and momentum kept building as we rallied a strong coalition of support from outside the profession.

This type of development wouldn’t be possible without your support, of course. North Carolina nurses and midwives have been relentless in their advocacy for the SAVE Act, and your tireless efforts have helped get us here. With unprecedented support inside the General Assembly, a full-court press of advocacy from throughout the state, and nearly 20 outside organizations adding their support, we are closer to the finish line than ever before.

Sincerely,
Jake Caccavaro, Manager of Political Engagement

Here are the things to emphasize about the SAVE act, to allow highly trained NC Midwives and Nurse Practitioners to practice in underserved areas and facilities https://ncnurses.org/advocacy/legislative/save-act/
The SAVE Act - summary House Bill 277 & Senate Bill 249

Access to quality healthcare is paramount in the middle of a pandemic and will remain a challenging issue in North Carolina for years to come.

Almost all national studies point to a looming national shortage of physicians and other critical care providers. That shortage will have a greater impact in North Carolina given the rapid growth the state has experienced and will continue to experience.

An underlying problem for rural residents is the centralization of healthcare services in major urban cities. Healthcare provider shortages will be dramatic for many residents living in rural North Carolina.

Access to quality healthcare not only carries a human cost, it carries an economic cost to areas of the state that continue to struggle in a mixed economic recovery.

NC lawmakers have the opportunity to lessen the impact of the physician shortages without compromising the quality of healthcare by modernizing regulations impacting many care providers.

Streamlining regulations to allow for Midwives &(APRNs) to fully utilize their training is one path to alleviate the looming crisis while helping to keep healthcare costs under control.

Giving patients greater access with more choices will help to strengthen the overall quality of healthcare in North Carolina.

Lawmakers need to focus on a patient access system that ensures quality care with proper oversight. A provider-based approach leads to increased regulatory control and additional costs to the patient at the added expense of patient access.

Numerous other states have lessened the regulatory burden on APRNs as a way to meet the demand for increased care without showing any compromise in the quality of patient care. None of those states have rescinded similar laws after they were enacted.

A 2015 NC study conducted by the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research at Duke University concluded that modernized APRN regulations in North Carolina would add to new economic and job growth across our state. Legislation like the SAVE Act would lead to annual healthcare system savings between $433 million and $4.3 billion in North Carolina.

Lack of access to qualified healthcare professionals means lack of quality care. Not being able to see a care provider when needed is the worst possible healthcare delivery system.

Thank you!

We are in a crisis in NC , due to the lack of midwives and maternity care in many rural counties, and the loss of 5 Birth Centers in the past 3 years. I want a midwife for ever woman who needs one! I want supportive doctors that work with us when needed. And I want an updated Midwife law and Advanced Practice Nurse law that supports our ability to continue to provide excellent outcomes for our clients to the full extent of our education and certification, in every county! Thank you in advance!! You are awesome and together we make a difference! Our voice is strong! Nancy

Learn about green energy at the Biogas workshop
June 15-21, at Powell Acres in Siler City.
Living Well Folk School,
http://www.livingwellearthstewards.com/living-well-folk-school/
is pleased to present David William House, renowned author of the Complete Biogas Handbook,
who has adapted the biogas digester to our cooler temperate NC climate, and is willing to share the process in our local 7 -day workshop.
This essential workshop will be held at Powell Acres in Chatham County for the inclusive price of $600, June 15 -21, with three meals per day provided, catered by Birthwise.
You can choose to do just the first two days, if you wish, to learn the theory, and build a smaller bag digester for use in heated spaces.
Sign up at the at the Workshop webpage below:) and pass it on!

Read David's comments below, and watch his videos to get to know him and become fascinated by the process of using plant waste or food waste to produce a clean energy, leaving behind residue that can be turned into compost.

On these videos is David House summarizing the way to heal the world with a renewable energy,
and reduce abject povery by creating microenterprise,
teaching and building biogas digesters inexpensively in low resource areas.
This leads to improving health and preventing deaths due to indoor air pollution, a significant problem from cooking smoke, around the world.

MIdwifery is a traditional skill of being with women supporting the natural birthing process. Our family has been running a permaculture homestead for the past 28 years, growing organic food with traditional tools, raising our children on the land, and we are also birthing an intentional community together with like-minded people in Randolph County, (home of the NC Zoo.) We have a new Folk School this year , too!

My son Ben and I are teaching one course at the Living Well Folk School on Natural Cooking over an open fire at our new community. Check out our link and sign up at
http://www.livingwellearthstewards.com/living-well-folk-school/

Children are welcome with a participating parent and there are a few scholarships for students.
