Thomas C. Amershek, 87, of Frontenac, Kansas, died on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at his home.
Tom was born November 21, 1938, in Mulberry, Kansas, the son of Anton “Tony” and Vera Maus Amershek.
Tom graduated from St. Mary’s High School and soon after signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox. Tom played minor league baseball for the Red Sox organization from 1956 to 1958, before an arm injury ended his baseball career. He was a pitcher for the organization.
Tom married Bonnie Ross on August 19, 1961. Tom and Bonnie were regulars at Barto’s Idle Hour and enjoyed dancing and spending time with their friends. Tom and Bonnie were avid sports fans and loved watching their children and grandchildren play sports. He passed on his baseball knowledge to his children and grandchildren and coached many years in the Frontenac recreation league. Tom and Bonnie were always in the stands supporting their children and grandchildren. He loved outdoor activities like gardening, fishing, hunting ducks and quail, and working bird dogs. Tom was also well known in Frontenac for his beautiful tomato and pepper plants.
After returning back to Pittsburg, Tom worked as a carpenter. He worked with Leo Gilmore, and Junior Viranda during his early years in the trade. He then worked with Jim Palmer Construction for many years before starting his own construction company with his son, Tim. Tom was always proud of the projects he completed and that the projects were done right.
Survivors include his children Tom (Debbie) Amershek, Tim Amershek, Terri Amershek, and Todd (Lisa) Amershek; son-in-law Scott Edge; 10 grandchildren, Steve (Krista) Amershek, Brandon (Jenni) Edge, Nic (Courtney) Edge, Julie (Paden) Shaffer, Justin (Megan) Amershek, Katie (Scott) Williams, Ross (Tori) Edge, Rachel (Zach Braucher) Amershek, Lukas (Maggie) Amershek, and Claire Amershek; 10 great grandchildren, Brayden Amershek, Kaden Shaffer, Kallen Shaffer, Beckett Amershek, Maci Edge, Kinley Shaffer, Ellie Edge, Owen Edge, Brixby Amershek, Grady Wayne Edge, and two additional great grandchildren expected in August and October. He is also survived by his brothers, Mark Amershek and Jeff (Theresa) Amershek and numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Tammy Jo Amershek Edge, his parents,
and sister, Rosemary Helms.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Brenner Mortuary. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be used as determined at a later date. These may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS, 66762. Friends may also leave condolences online. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary.
