Pitt opened the 270,000-square-foot Rec Center in September. Its nine floors include a rock climbing wall, massive pool, cycling studio and indoor track overlooking Oakland. It immediately proved to be a hit with students.

But the center’s opening wasn’t without some pushback. Employees who previously enjoyed free access to fitness facilities at Bellfield and Trees halls have expressed frustration that they have lost this amenity. Both the Bellfield and Trees spaces were closed due to budgetary and maintenance considerations.

The new center has a tiered pricing plan. For employees earning under $50,000 annually, membership is $35 per month. It’s $45 for those who make more than $50,000.

Pitt officials say these fees ensure the quality and long-term sustainability of the $250 million center, its services and maintenance.
