Individuals with Fibromyalgia commonly deal with Reactive Hypoglycemia, which is a low blood sugar response that happens an hour or so after eating a meal high in carbohydrates. Even without diagnosable blood sugar issues, those with fibromyalgia tend to be more sensitive to these changes and can experience symptoms. Paying careful attention to keeping blood sugar levels steady throughout the day can provide some relief.

Sharing this open opportunity to learn more about the practice of functional nutrition.

We have all heard the quote, “let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food,” but how do we apply this advice meaningfully to heal from our ailments?

The answer: Functional Medicine!

Functional medicine is an evidence-based approach to healing that focuses on nutrition, lifestyle, mindset, and the autonomic nervous system.

Uniqueness in genetics, metabolics, lifestyle, environment, history, and gut microbiome merge to influence our overall health and nutrition requirements. Recognizing our bio-individual nature is the hallmark of Functional Nutrition.

In other words, one size does NOT fit all, when it comes to food as medicine.

Based on the principals of Functional Medicine, the focus of Functional Nutrition is on restoring optimum functioning in the body and working to resolve the root cause of illness and dysfunction, as opposed to chasing symptoms.

This approach, in combination with the incredible power of the mind-body connection, sets the stage for restoring balance, well-being, and healing.

As nurses, we can chose to expand our professional practice and improve patient outcomes by pursuing training in functional nutrition.

As individuals, we can use principles of functional medicine to drastically improve our own well-being and quality of life. We can heal from chronic ailments.

If you are interested in learning more, we invite you to join us this Monday, April 11th at 7pm, via Zoom, for our monthly chapter meeting, where we will hear from Diane Greco Allen, Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach, Registered Nurse, and author of, “It Might Be Your Pancreas.”

This event is open to the public, chapter membership is not required to attend. 🥒🙌

“Irritability and unstable mood often characterize depression, so it’s relevant that multiple independent studies have found that teaching people with depression, who were consuming relatively poor diets, how to change to a whole foods Mediterranean-style diet resulted in significant improvements.”

Researchers say there may be a link between eating an unhealthy diet and anger control.

🍯 Honey has shown to be superior to usual care for the improvement of symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (specifically cough frequency and severity).

Antibiotic over-prescription for basic upper respiratory tract infections in primary care is a problem, as it exacerbates antimicrobial resistance. There is a need for effective alternatives to antibiotic prescribing for basic, common illness. Honey could help efforts to slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance, as it provides a widely available, effective, and cheap alternative to antibiotics.

Do you reach for the honey jar when you start to feel a cold coming on?
