Hi! My name is Kelly and I’m the owner of Form and Function Pelvic Health!! 👋

Today I wanted to re-introduce myself and share a little bit more about my “why” and where my passion truly lies within the world of pelvic health!

Following the birth of my third baby, I was having many of the usual “mommy” symptoms that so many women experience – leaking, abdominal separation and weakness, and mild pelvic pain. I had heard about pelvic floor therapy, and began working with a pelvic PT in Denver, CO who had her own practice. This was the beginning of my passion for women’s health!

It was as if a light bulb went off in my mind – for the four years since I had had my first baby, I had spent so many hours a day clenching my pelvic floor, taking shallow breaths, overdoing it when I did exercise, and always feeling insecure and like having kids had “wrecked” my body. 😔

Working with my PT changed all that – I finally felt like I was able to connect my core and pelvic floor, working the smaller groups of muscles, and not just focusing on “ab exercises.”

Within a few months my leaking resolved and I had real tools to cope with my pelvic pain and GI issues. I felt more confident and comfortable in my new “mommy” body, and valued it so much more than I had before!! 💕

This was the turning point – if there were other therapists who were able to help moms and women feel strong and confident in their bodies, then I had to be one of them too. I knew that my days working as a hospital OT were over – I took the plunge into women’s health, and haven’t looked back since!

So you have “Diastasis Recti” (aka abdominal wall separation) postpartum… how do you know what exercises are safe for you?

First - watch out for bulging or doming in your midline, and make sure you’re not bearing down into your pelvic floor.

Here are some of my favorites, especially for the first couple of months postpartum:

👉🏻 Angel wings
👉🏻 Hip rotations with focus on finding TA muscles
👉🏻 Pelvic tilt on all fours
👉🏻 Bird Dog
👉🏻 Bridges

The good news is that any exercise can be safe if you’re strong enough and your body can handle the abdominal pressure needed for that exercise! The trick is not to overdo it too soon.

As you get stronger, you’ll be able to gradually introduce more challenging exercises - and these challenges can help to keep closing your diastasis! Yay!

So hang in there if you’re in the thick of it postpartum - and give us a ring if you want any pointers! 💕

Previously we mentioned some of the dangers of running to early - so, how do you know if your body is actually prepared to hit the road again?!

Luckily the experts have made a quick list of exercise MUSTs to make sure you’re ready - Check out these 7 exercises and see how you feel!

👍🏻 Walking 30 minutes
👍🏻 Single leg balance 10 seconds
👍🏻 Single leg squat 10 repetitions each side
👍🏻 Jog on the spot 1 minute
👍🏻 Forward bounds 10 repetitions
👍🏻 Hop in place 10 repetitions each leg
👍🏻 Single leg ‘running man’: opposite arm and hip flexion/extension (bent knee) 10 repetitions each side

To make sure that patients are ready for running, it’s important to assess pelvic floor muscle strength to check that it’s strong enough to support the strain of running! 🏃🏻‍♀️

Additionally, even if you CAN do all of these exercises, if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, that’s a sign that your body isn’t quite ready for running:

🛑 Urinary and/or f***l incontinence prior to or during commencement of running
🛑 Pressure/bulge/dragging in the va**na prior to, during or after running
🛑 Ongoing or onset of va**nal bleeding, not related to menstrual cycle, during or after attempted low impact or high impact exercise (check back with your midwife or doctor)
🛑 Musculoskeletal pain e.g. pelvic pain prior to or during running

What to do if you are experiencing those symptoms and really want to get back to running again? 🧐 We’re here to help you on the road to recovery and to get you back to doing what you love, running or whatever else! 🙌🏻

I used to view Pelvic Floor Therapy as a MUST when I was postpartum, and it took until I was having severe SI and back pain in my last pregnancy to realize what a difference PT can make during pregnancy!

Now I truly love helping women feel their best during pregnancy as well as prepare for their best postpartum recovery- and here’s just a few of the benefits!

💗 Get a handle on common pain patterns during pregnancy before they take over your life! Some of these include p***c symphysis pain, SI pain, and low back pain

💗 Help you find the pregnancy support garment that can make the difference between playing with your kids and exercising, and feeling like you need to live on the couch (been there!)

💗 Strengthen your pelvic floor to get ahold of urinary urgency and leaking

💗 Less discomfort with intimacy! (YAY!)

💗 Prepare for labor and delivery

💗 Reduce the risk of tearing during birth

💗 Learn how to connect to your pelvic floor and core during pregnancy now, for an easier recovery after baby!

I have a confession to make - on my 27th birthday, a package arrived that I had ordered - a several months supply of pantiliners - my husband snarkily commented, “Happy Birthday to you!” And I thought, “Oh, gosh, I can’t believe this is my life!”

This was my wake up call, and I finally made the call to an amazing pelvic floor therapist in Denver who helped me regain control and finally stop leaking! @‌kleinphysicaltherapy

And if I can do it so can you! Seriously, let’s say this loud and clear - leaking is common, but it’s not normal - in the sense that you really can fix it!

If you’re leaking, there’s an underlying dysfunction that can be treated… and I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to settle for absorbent underwear, pads or packing a set of clothes to change into after you go on a run! Taking back control of your bladder is possible and you deserve it.

If you’ve been waiting for a wake-up call (like I was!) - maybe this is it!

So many women struggle with one of the following (or multiple) issues related to their cycles/fertility:

👉🏻 PMS

👉🏻 Painful periods

👉🏻 Pelvic pain

👉🏻 Low fertility

👉🏻 Infertility

👉🏻 Endometriosis

👉🏻 PCOS

And let’s be honest. These common problems can feel really isolating and can truly wreak havoc on your life.

So… is there anything we can do to fix (or at the very least improve) these issues??

I recently read an incredible book from the Fertility Science Institute called “Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition” by Marilyn Shannon.

Honestly, the the past few months has been a whirlwind for me in navigating new fertility and hormonal concerns, and in addition to help from some amazing NAPRO physicians, this book was an amazing resource.

The author shares practical step-by-step guidelines for women with fertility concerns and specifically those with PMS symptoms, PCOS and endometriosis to take charge of their fertility through better nutrition and supplements.

This book was truly a game changer for me, and we can’t recommend it enough to our clients!!

If you have more questions, please send us a message and we’d love to connect you with other health care professionals in the Pittsburgh area to find answers to your fertility concerns. Visit the link in our bio!! We look forward to hearing from you soon! 💗

What is “pelvic organ prolapse” anyway? We’re glad you asked!!

According to the Mayo Clinic, pelvic organ prolapse is, “when one or more pelvic organs drop from their position. This makes a bulge in the va**na, called a prolapse.”

Normally, the connective tissues and muscles of the pelvic floor hold the pelvic organs (va**na, bladder, uterus, and re**um) in place. Prolapse happens when the muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor weaken. This often happens as a result of pregnancy and childbirth.

Prolapse symptoms to look for are…

👉🏻 Feeling like something is falling out of the va**na

👉🏻 Feeling like you have a misplaced tampon

👉🏻 A bulging sensation or heaviness in the va**na or re**um

👉🏻 Difficulty emptying your bladder and/or bowels

The good news? Pelvic floor PT can help manage symptoms of prolapse, so you can feel strong and confident again. What are some things we focus on? Pressure management is a big one, and that includes better breathing patterns and better posture, as well as helping you build a stronger pelvic floor and core. 💪🏻

Whether you’re two months postpartum or 20 years, it’s never too late to start!

What is the “endo diet” and why is it important? We’re glad you asked!!

According to the Mayo Clinic, endometriosis is “and often-painful condition in which tissue that is similar to the inner lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It often affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis.”

Endometriosis can be managed and treated in a variety of different ways, but one easy way is through your diet!

The endo diet typically consists of…

👉🏻 Healthy meat and protein intake

👉🏻 Lots of fruits and veggies

👉🏻 Legumes and beans (if tolerated)

👉🏻 Nuts and seeds

👉🏻 Starches such as rice, sweet potatoes, or quinoa

👉🏻 Gluten-free bread, oatmeal (not high in sugar, and not in excess)

For more info about endometriosis and how we at Form and Function can help relieve symptoms of endo, visit the link in our bio! We would love to set up a FREE 30 min phone call to chat with you! We hope to hear from you soon!

Let’s talk about 3 things I would NEVER do because I know better as a pelvic floor therapist:

1️⃣ I would never p*e “just in case”

2️⃣ I would never overdo it postpartum

3️⃣ I would never p**p without a squatty potty

Share this with a mom who needs to hear this today!! For more resources on how to heal your postpartum body and feel like yourself again, visit the link in our bio today! We at Form and Function are here for you! 🥰
