Feeling undervalued?

It’s not your skill it’s your mindset.

When you don’t lead like the CEO, no one treats you like one.

Year 1 as a new Director of Nursing is hard for a reason.

You’re expected to lead staff who were just your peers.
Handle family conflict with grace, even when no one trained you for escalation.
Interpret regulations that impact every department.
Build trust with the administration while managing staffing and survey readiness.

That is a lot for one person.

The first year stretches you in three critical areas:
• Leadership identity (nurse to executive leader)
• Emotional intelligence (staying steady under pressure)
• Regulatory strategy (knowing what to prioritize and why)

These aren’t “natural traits.” They’re learned skills.

And when you have a mentor who has already navigated survey cycles, staffing crises, and family escalations, your learning curve shortens dramatically. Confidence grows faster when someone shows you the road and gives you a real roadmap.

Anything is possible with support.

If you’re a new DON (2 years or less) and you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’m Michelle Carter, founder of the DON Success Network, and this is exactly why we created it.

19 years as a Director of Nursing… and I still remember my first year like it was yesterday.

I walked into that role thinking clinical excellence alone would carry me. Honestly? It didn’t. I made mistakes. I mishandled staff conflicts. I overworked myself. I second-guessed decisions more times than I’d like to admit.

Because leadership at this level isn’t just nursing knowledge. It’s team engagement, conflict management, regulatory interpretation, emotional intelligence, and learning how to lead people, not just tasks.

Through mistakes came victories.
Through pressure came perspective.
And through mentorship came mastery.

Your first year as a Director of Nursing doesn’t have to be trial by fire. Growth happens faster when you’re supported.

If you’re a new DON and it feels heavier than expected, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out solo.

Anything is possible with support.

CEO Leadership Tip:

Track your impact, not just your tasks.

Ask yourself daily: “

What did I improve today?”

That’s how you build legacy, not burnout.

No one prepares you for the weight of Year 1 as a Director of Nursing.

You’re carrying staffing, compliance, morale, family concerns, survey readiness, and resident care… and you’re still expected to stay calm like it’s easy.

If you’ve been replaying decisions at night or questioning yourself during the day, hear me: Year 1 isn’t hard because you lack skill.
It’s hard because leadership at this level requires mentorship, and most new DONs are promoted without it.

Struggling in Year 1 isn’t failure.
It’s growth without guidance.

And you don’t have to grow alone. Anything is possible with support.

If you’re a new DON and you want real coaching for your first 180 days, send me a message and let’s connect.

I’m Michelle Carter, founder of the DON Success Network + DON Success Academy, and we help brand-new DONs build clarity, confidence, and leadership systems in their first 180 days.

Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. 💜

Hearing feedback like this reminds us why we do what we do: supporting nursing leaders, uplifting professionals, and creating spaces where growth, confidence, and compassionate leadership can thrive.

Thank you, Monica, for your kind words and for being part of this journey. Your trust, energy, and commitment to excellence inspire us every day.

We appreciate every nurse leader who shows up, grows, and continues to care deeply for their teams and communities. You matter. Your leadership matters. And we’re honored to walk alongside you.

With gratitude always.

You carry everyone’s emotions.
But who holds yours?

You cried in the break room… and still had to lead.
You kept your voice steady in meetings while your heart was heavy.
You responded when you wanted to react.
You chose softness when the moment called for strength.

That’s not a weakness.
That’s emotional intelligence.
And emotional intelligence is a leadership skill, not a bonus.

As a Director of Nursing, you’re expected to manage compliance, staffing, families, administrators, crises… and your own emotions.

No one teaches you how to do that.

Inside the DON Success Network, we do.

We teach you how to:
• Lead without losing emotional control
• Respond instead of react
• Set boundaries without guilt
• Hold space for others without abandoning yourself

Leading with EQ doesn’t make you less powerful.
It makes you the leader your team actually needs.

You’re more than a title.
You’re a whole leader.

✨ Ready to lead without carrying it all alone?

You were promoted to Director of Nursing for a reason. You didn’t get here by accident.

Your experience matters. Your heart matters. Your leadership matters.

And even the most capable leaders grow faster and lead stronger with mentorship and guidance. Not because they’re incapable, but because they’re capable of so much more with the right support system.

That’s why I believe so deeply in mentorship for new DONs. When you have steady guidance, you gain the perspective, strategy, and confidence that turns year one from survival mode into a solid foundation.

Inside the DON Success Network and through 1:1 mentorship, new leaders get the tools and support that make the role feel more manageable and more powerful.

If this season feels heavy, don’t label it a weakness.
Its growth.

And remember: anything is possible with support.
