For a multitude of reasons, I haven’t been filled with the holiday spirit over the past few years.

I didn’t decorate and just couldn’t be bothered. It all felt like too much effort so everything remained untouched in the attic.

This year was different.
I decided I needed to bring back that childhood excitement, sparkle & joy.
While I wanted it to feel “Christmas-y” for my mum’s visit, I did it for me.

Here’s what happened…
I’ve silently & peacefully watched twinkling lights.
I’ve reminisced about my travels as I look at ornaments & decorations collected over the years.
The holiday scents and sounds have brought calm and ease.
I’ve played games, laughed, ate, listened, cried, sang, danced, shared & even taught my mum her first chess lesson.

This holiday has been about slower, simpler moments for me.
Presence.
It truly is the best gift to yourself and to others.

I might just keep the Christmas vibe up for a while longer!

Spending time with my mumma as we enjoyed the beauty of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Winter Flower Show.

These are the moments my nervous system craves. Tiny pockets of peace amidst the holiday chaos.

Finding “glimmers”, a term coined by Deb Dana, is the fastest way to find some calm & shift your nervous system to a more ventral state. A glimmer is a micro-moment of safety that tells your nervous system that it’s safe.

Science Snack: Where are you on the ladder? 🪜🧠

Your nervous system moves up and down all day long based on how our brain perceives the world.

🔴 Dorsal Vagal: Shutdown. Heavy. Numb. Your system has unplugged to protect it from extreme overwhelm.
🟡 Sympathetic: Mobilization. Fight or Flight. You feel anxious, on edge, frustrated.
🟢 Ventral Vagal: Safety and connection. Grounded, open-hearted, and capable of being social. Rest and digest.

Self-regulation isn't about being in one spot all the time. It’s about noticing when you’ve climbed into the Red or gotten stuck in the Yellow.

Awareness is the only way to find your way back to the Green. Where are you standing today?

Monday mood: Inspired, grounded, and ready for the week.

Coming off the Solstice, I’m realizing that my "strong start" to the week is a direct result of checking in with my nervous system and honoring what my body needed.
My own Somatic Safety Scorecard told me this was a MUCH needed reset.
(Geeking out on the vagus nerve & coregulation has also helped!)

Took the weekend to care for my own nervous system.
