Healthy habits start young! National Children’s Dental Health Month is a reminder of the importance of teaching kids good oral care early. Brushing twice a day, flossing, limiting sugary snacks, and regular dental checkups can set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Parents, caregivers, and communities play a key role in making dental care fun and consistent for children. Let’s empower our kids with the knowledge and tools they need to keep their teeth strong, gums healthy, and smiles bright.

Together, we can help children grow up healthy, confident, and cavity-free!

Mary Eliza Mahoney made history as the first Black professionally trained nurse in the United States, breaking racial barriers in healthcare at a time when opportunities for Black women were extremely limited. Graduating in 1879, she set a powerful standard for excellence, professionalism, and compassionate patient care.

Beyond her clinical work, Mahoney was a fierce advocate for diversity and equity in nursing. She co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, working to create space, support, and recognition for Black nurses nationwide. Her dedication helped open doors for generations who followed in her footsteps.

Mary Eliza Mahoney’s legacy lives on in every nurse who leads with skill, empathy, and determination. We honor her courage, resilience, and lasting impact on healthcare.

🖤 Celebrating Progress & Community This Black History Month 🖤

This Black History Month, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on a powerful example of community-centered progress right here in Homewood — the construction of the new PCHS health center building.

This new state-of-the-art facility — rising on the site of the current Alma Illery Medical Center — represents more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of healing, support, and opportunity for generations. The expanded space will bring comprehensive medical care, preventive services, dental care, pharmacy access, and more directly into the neighborhood. For decades, Homewood has been a vibrant center of African American culture, resilience, and community leadership. By investing in accessible, high-quality health care infrastructure in the community where many residents live and work, we’re honoring that legacy — ensuring that access to care is a part of our shared future. 💪🏽✨

Let’s celebrate this milestone as a step toward healthier lives, stronger communities, and the continuation of a legacy built on empowerment and progress. 🏙️❤️

This Valentine’s season, we’re reminded that the strongest hearts aren’t just built on love; they’re supported by community, care, and healthy habits.

Whether it’s family, friends, or neighbors checking in, support plays a powerful role in heart health. Here are a few simple ways to show your heart some love:

- Keep Moving: Even small amounts of movement, like walking, stretching, or dancing, help strengthen your heart.
- Stay on Top of Checkups: Regular health screenings and appointments help catch concerns early and keep your heart on track.
- Care for Your Stress: Rest, deep breathing, and making time for joy all support heart health—because mental well-being matters too.

This month, let’s look out for one another, encourage healthy habits, and remember that caring for our hearts is something we do together. Because strong hearts build strong communities.

Dr. Charles Drew was a groundbreaking physician, surgeon, and medical researcher whose work transformed modern medicine. Through his pioneering research on blood preservation and storage, Dr. Drew developed innovative methods for large-scale blood banks, advances that have saved millions of lives worldwide.

During World War II, his expertise helped establish the first major blood collection programs, proving that blood plasma could be safely stored and transported for emergency care. Despite facing racial discrimination, Dr. Drew remained committed to scientific excellence and ethical medical practice, ultimately reshaping emergency medicine and trauma care as we know it.

Dr. Drew’s legacy lives on every time blood is donated, stored, and used to save a life. We honor his brilliance, courage, and lasting impact on healthcare today.

Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. That includes removing barriers like cost, lack of access, discrimination, and unequal treatment, so care isn’t determined by who you are or where you live.

At PCHS, health equity is more than a definition; it’s a commitment. We believe healthcare should be rooted in:

• Access—ensuring individuals and families can get the care they need, when they need it
• Dignity—treating every person with respect, compassion, and understanding
• Quality Care—delivering services that meet high standards and support long-term well-being

When care is equitable, communities are stronger, healthier, and more resilient. We’re proud to do our part in advancing a healthcare system that works for everyone, not just some.

Together, we can continue building healthier futures for all.
