I really appreciated this thoughtful article written by pediatrician Dr. Joel Gator MD.
I had my tonsils removed when I was five years old. I was constantly sick as a child ā strep throat, ear infections, and just about everything in between. After the surgery, I experienced rare and life-threatening complications. If my mom hadnāt recognized the signs of internal bleeding, I donāt think I would be here today.
Looking back, it was pretty clear that my body was in a chronic inflammatory state. Constantly getting sick was my bodyās way of whispering that something was wrong before it screamed. At the time, the next ālogicalā step in conventional medicine was removing my tonsils, but that didnāt address the root cause. I was still getting sick afterward ā in some ways, even worse than before.
Back then, taking a holistic approach felt very foreign. It wasnāt until we began addressing the underlying inflammation in my body that I truly started to get better.
In my experience, many traditional pediatricians arenāt always trained to ask the deeper āwhyā questions ā which is why, as parents, we have to feel empowered to think critically and ask, āWhy is this happening?ā
Sometimes procedures like this are absolutely warranted and necessary, and sometimes they arenāt.
The surgery parents are told is āroutineā ā and what you deserve to know before saying yes
