The Midwife Center for Birth & Women's Health is southwestern Pennsylvania's only licensed and accredited freestanding birth center offering primary gynecological care, prenatal care and childbirth in a warm and supportive birth center. Our goal is to provide safe and satisfying care that is personalized to meet the needs of the client. We are guided by the philosophy that a person should be in control of their own health care, including their birth experience. The Midwife Center accepts the following payment methods for primary gynecological, prenatal and childbirth care:
โ€“ Most PA medical assistance plans, including UPMC for You, Gateway and United Community Plan
โ€“ Most local and national private insurance plans, including UPMC, Highmark*, United and Aetna
โ€“ If you do not have insurance, we can assist you in applying for medical assistance. If you do not qualify for medical assistance you may be eligible for sliding-scale care. The Midwife Center also offers payment plans.

*If you are pregnant and have Highmark, please visit our website at midwifecenter.org or call 412.321.6880 to learn more. Our home-like facility is conveniently located on Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The first floor of our Center houses three nature-themed birth suites, each with its own large bathroom with a whirlpool bath, and our family kitchen. Upstairs is a large waiting room, three exam rooms and administrative offices. Our extensive video and book library is available here as well. Care at our facility is provided by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who are registered nurses with additional education in midwifery. As all CNMs, our midwives are certified by examination through the American College of Nurse-Midwives or the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Council and licensed by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine. TMC is a private, non-profit practice, supported in part by patient fees, United Way Contributors Choice, and tax-deductible contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations. TMC accepts most insurance plans and is a member organization of Adagio Health, which enables the Center to provide gynecological care to clients for free or on a sliding fee scale based on income and family size. The facility is licensed by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC). Please visit our website to learn more about our services, including weekly Wellness Walk-In Fridays program from 12:30-5:00 pm. http://www.midwifecenter.org

To close out Black History Month, we're celebrating Mary Stepp Burnette Hayden ๐Ÿ“š

Mary Stepp Burnette Hayden (1858-1956) was a Black midwife and herbalist in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She was born into slavery on a plantation and was freed at the age of 7 after the Civil War ended. Like many Black midwives in the 19th century, Hayden learned midwifery from her mother. She practiced as a midwife until the age of 90 and even delivered her own grandchildren. She cared for Black and white families and often provided her services for free for people who couldn't afford to pay. For many Black families, healers and midwives were their only option for healthcare due to segregated hospitals. Black midwives like Hayden were vital parts of their communities.

Mary Stepp Burnette Hayden passed away in 1956 at the age of 90. Her granddaughter, Mary Othella Burnette, shared her memories of "Granny Hayden" for StoryCorps - check out Hayden's legacy here: https://www.npr.org/2022/02/18/1081291769/midwife-slavery-storycorps

10,000 Births: Growing community, one birth at a time ๐Ÿ’œ

Hannah, a Midwife Center client, shared these amazing multi-generational photos of four births at The Midwife Center! Hannah's mom gave birth to her and her brother at The Midwife Center back when we were known as BirthPlace. Now an adult, Hannah has welcomed her own children at The Midwife Center.

Meet these four Midwife Center babies:
-Zac (1984), who was welcomed with the help of Karen Knudson, one of our founding midwives (pictured in the second slide)
-Hannah (1987)
-Nora (2017) - also the 3rd baby born after TMC's expanded building officially opened!
-Jameson (2019)

Thank you, Hannah, for sharing this amazing full-circle story!

To celebrate 10,000th births, we're asking for your help to raise $10,000 to support our next 10,000 babies. Can you help us meet this goal? Every gift makes a real difference for our families who count on us for compassionate, personalized care: https://bit.ly/10k-births

10,000 Births: Growing community, one birth at a time ๐Ÿ’œ

Andra Finnegan, a Midwife Center client and board member, welcomed her daughter at The Midwife Center in 2023. She shared these wonderful photos of her family and reflections on her care:

"The TMC team does not just provide care, they partner along side you...In my first pregnancy we had some serious genetic concerns. Through the entire scary process our midwives walked along side myself and my husband - keeping us informed, empathizing, and encouraging. Additionally, the postpartum support group is in a class of its own. Jul is an incredible facilitator who has created a safe environment for mothers to build community while healing together."

Andra's birth was one of (nearly) 10,000th at The Midwife Center since we opened in 1982! Now, we're preparing for our next 10,000 births by raising $10,000. Can you help us celebrate this milestone with a donation? Every gift makes a difference: https://bit.ly/10k-births

For Black History Month, we're highlighting the "Mothers of Gynecology" monument created by Michelle Browder, which honors Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy.

Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy were three of the enslaved women who were forcibly experimented on by Dr. Marion Sims in the 1840s without anesthesia. For generations, the stories of Anarcha, Betsey, Lucy, and other unnamed Black women who were experimented on, were erased, while Dr. Sims was celebrated as the Father of Gynecology for his scientific discoveries as a result of his experiments.

Michelle Browder's monument is located in Montgomery, Alabama, not far from where Sims conducted his experiments, flips that narrative by centering Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy and honoring the sacrifice of all of the Black women whose sacrifices contributed to the field of gynecology. The monument, "acts as a first step toward teaching and reimagining the true story of the nation, facing the injustice of the past and honoring the courage of overlooked heroes."

Learn more about the "Mothers of Gynecology" and Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy's stories here: https://www.anarchalucybetsey.org/.
