The crew from Burchick Construction Company have been working hard, and Holy Family and Nazareth Prep's new gymnasium is starting to take shape. This week, crews began installing the roof, which meant our campus has been hosting a very tall crane all week! 🏗️🧱

For we're looking back on a pivotal moment in Holy Family's 125-year history at a time when the world was rebuilding after war. ❤️

1946: In the wake of World War II, 48 Polish orphans arrive at Holy Family Institute after a long and taxing journey through numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Take a look at another one of the important women in Holy Family's history!

Mother Hilary Okon was the first Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth appointed as Holy Family's Executive Director. 🏠

For the first 45 years, the Sisters handled the day-to-day work of caring for children and a Spiritan priest served as the administrator. Mother Hilary made history in 1945 when she became the first Sister to take the helm. She served in the crucial years following World War II, when Holy Family welcomed 48 Polish war orphans.

Don't worry, our campus is a-okay! Yesterday we had a visit from four local fire departments to tour the campus, become familiar with our buildings, and create an advance plan in case of emergency. Thank you to Emsworth VFC, Ohio Township VFC, Stowe Township VFD, and West View Volunteer Fire Department for keeping our campus and our community safe!

We're honoring Women's History Month by featuring some of the important women in Holy Family's history!

Mother Frances Siedliska (1842-1902), is the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. 🙏

In 1842, Frances was born in Poland to a noble family and would eventually feel called to dedicate her life in service to the Church. Frances became a Catholic nun, taking the name of Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd. In 1875, with the blessing of Pope Pius IX, she founded the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (CSFN) in Rome.

“We are called to extend the Kingdom of God’s love among ourselves and others,” the Mother Foundress wrote, “by imitating Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, whose lives were centered in the love of God and one another, and by witnessing to that love through dedicated service to the Church, especially in our ministry to the family.”

Today we're introducing you to one of our newest programs: Artful Spirits! 🎨🎶

Artful Spirits is revitalizing children's engagement in worship by integrating the arts and fostering intergenerational collaboration, primarily in Pittsburgh's Black church communities. The program uses music, art, dance, and storytelling to re-engage children ages 7-12, blending traditional elements with dynamic expressions of faith.

Check out these photos from their first event at Point Park University!

✨Black History Month Spotlight: St. Charles Lwanga (1860-1886)✨

Mentor. Martyr. Steadfast believer. St. Charles Lwanga lived in Uganda, serving, with other young men, as a page to the king. He shared his Catholic faith with others in the king’s household, baptizing some in secret when the king threatened their lives. St. Charles, along with 21 others, was put to death in 1886 for refusing to denounce his faith – inspiring future Catholics in Uganda and beyond.

Holy Family’s Chapel features a statue of St. Charles Lwanga, in honor of his courage, and in an effort to represent all those we serve in our sacred space.
