Today on sunscreen myths... Dr. Vujevich tackles the topic of Vitamin D. It is a common misconception that extended sun exposure is a good thing because it is an effective way to get Vitamin D. The truth is -- not only is it far from the only source of Vitamin D, Dr. Vujevich explains why extended sun exposure, particularly without proper use of sun protection, will actually cause more harm than good.
So how should you be getting your Vitamin D, then? While the first answer should be your diet, this alone is not always sufficient. Talk to your primary care provider about taking Vitamin D supplements, particularly if your Vitamin D is lower than it should be. And while you will still naturally get some Vitamin D from the sun, you never, ever should be using sun exposure as a means to ""get more Vitamin D"" -- since the possible long-term consequences of too much sun exposure are not worth it.
