Muscle of the Month: Sternocleidomastoid (Part 1)
For being in the front of your neck, an area you wouldn't associate with pain so much as the back of your neck, any trigger points found in the sternocleidomastoid wouldn't seem to do much against you... though in reality, it stands as a perfect example of how tricky trigger points can be. In this muscle, pain from trigger points will radiate elsewhere in your body, and not its originating point. Being massaged at the front of the neck tends to slip most people's mind as something our bodies may need, but the sternocleidomastoid shouldn't be ignored - this muscle can cause its worth in trouble if overlooked. It can add up to be a particularly extensive list, so this entry will have to serve as a Part 1 to the sternocleidomastoid.
With a name tailored to its attachment to the sternum, clavicle and mastoid process (the bony k**b behind your ear,) the sternocleidomastoid muscle wraps itself around the front and sides of your neck. The muscle itself rarely hurts regardless of troubles, however, painless tightness and stiffness in the area can indicate the presence of trigger points.
Trigger points found in the sternal branch of the muscle will often send their symptoms upward to the cranium, face and jaws. A frontal headache can be considered a signature of sternocleidomastoid trigger points. You can also look for deep eye pain, tongue pain when swallowing, and headaches over the eye, behind the ear, and in the top of the head. Knots in this muscle can contribute to temporomandibular joint pain (the joint that connects your jaw to your skull,) and on occasion, pain will be sent to the back of the neck and top of the breastbone, or brief attacks of pain may occur to the side of the face or cheek.
With all that said, there are just two more symptoms to note for the sternal branch - there are unique symptoms for the clavicular branch that we'll go more into depth about in our newsletter next month! Deep earache and toothache in the back molars can be attributed to trigger points in the sternocleidomastoid as well. If you are experiencing any of these trigger point symptoms coupled together, let your therapist here at Terra Massage know when you come in! Some massage in the front of the neck may seem funny at first, but it certainly isn't something to go unchecked.
..Thank you for your time and dedication to our spa and your wellness, we hope this letter brings you something new to think about next time you book an appointment with us.
