Ìyá Pittsburgh wants to provide our city with a Traditional Midwife. Historically the community midwife supported families through not just pregnancy, but illness, education, and the highs and lows of life. The community midwife supported families and the community ensured the midwife was able to provide for their family. This mutually beneficial relationship lasted for generations.

Now at a time when insurance is unattainable for so many families, and maternal and infant outcomes continue to be dependent on race, this relationship is needed to make serious change. Imagine knowing that you have support to attend your prenatal appointment, or that you have questions and can get answers “after hours.”

A trained community member to answer the questions teens don’t want to ask parents but desperately need answers to. A place for birth attendants to ask questions and learn skills to better serve their clients. A new dynamic, one of trust and support. One that doesn’t require payment from families when they are seeking support. A return to shared thriving. A midwife living in the community, available to people who need it the most when it matters. We are raising the funds to provide a living wage for a Traditional midwife who simply wants to serve their community.

Ìyá Pittsburgh Project wants to help make this possible. We want to show that community care is not only possible but desired. That Pittsburgh, as community,  wants to know that the needs of our neighbors are met. This salary, provided by individual donations, will provide over $250,000 worth of care and community trainings.

Thank you for supporting our vision.

Our Story

Michele plunged into their midwifery journey head first as a 16 year old looking for some direction in their life after attending the undiagnosed twin birth of a friend in the basement of another friend's house. What followed was a few apprenticeships, college classes, a distance study course, lots of self-study, and a continued passion for holding space for pregnant and birthing people. As a genderq***r (trans nonbinary) midwife, Michele has a special interest in providing care for q***r and gender-diverse clients from pre-conception through early parenthood, as well as providing inclusive and culturally competent Well Person Care.

Michele now spends time teaching student birthworkers, teaching s*x & s*xuality education, and expanding their reach as a community herbalist. At some point, when another 12 hours are added to the day, they will find time to get back to gardening and hand quilting.
