Thank you so much for this spotlight, Holly April Harris Art. This window honors Mrs. Elmira Soroka’s memory. It measures 27 feet wide by 16 feet high and was made by Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios. We also believe that, “𝐻𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑙.” With hindsight, history is presented as a guide for the present and future generations. We are glad when visitors find the hidden gems of history around our grounds.

“𝐻𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑙.” — ʟᴏʀᴅ ᴀᴄᴛᴏɴ

When searching for a friend’s final resting place earlier this week, I happened upon the chapel at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. The huge stained glass window shows the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I was first quite intrigued with the idea of death and freedom being tied together. And then about how remembering the past times with those we have lost is really is, like the quote says, illumination. Thinking in that way, sets the grieving free also.

Our Story

Harry C. Neel, founder of Jefferson Memorial Park, envisioned and designed Jefferson with memorials flush with the ground to mark the beauty of the sweeping lawns and towering trees. Incorporated in 1929, the cemetery was constructed on a parcel of land that had been the Snee Family Farm. Mr. Neel named his new cemetery, Jefferson Memorial Park after Thomas Jefferson whom he greatly admired. It has always been the vision of our chairman, John D. Neel, to build a funeral home on the grounds of Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. That desire was fulfilled on September 1, 1993 when Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home opened it's doors.
