Not just body parts on athletes. These are growth plate injuries
They may sound scary, but they don’t have to be.
Still, if your young athlete is complaining of pain at any of these locations, the aggravating activity should be stopped and he or she should be evaluated as soon as possible.
These athletes are still growing, meaning their bones aren’t as strong as the tendons or ligaments that attach there.
Pain at these locations could be from overuse, or sudden onset.
Having a medical professional evaluate with imaging allows for the exact extent of injury to be determined. This will ultimately drive the treatment plan.
Treatment could be as little as activity modification, or as much as bracing for long periods of time, depending on the extent of the growth plate injury.
Causes:
Year round training without proper rest or recovery
Multiple sports at the same time
Poor technique
Too much mobility at the area, or not enough
Muscular imbalance or weakness
💪🏽 minimize risk by
Encouraging, proper rest in recovery
Don’t ignore pain – early treatment matters!
Check in with coaches and physical therapist, if there is pain in any of these areas, limping, or decreased performance.
Early detection means faster, recovery, and better performance!
