Did you know that "clogged ducts" are not clogs at all. Those tender and firm areas on your breast are really swelling and inflammation that has narrowed the duct and is causing restricted milk flow. This is why we now use ice, light massage, and ibuprofen to help resolve " clogs" instead of heat, heavy massage and lots of pumping. Your breast is not a clogged pipe but more like a sprained ankle so it should be treated with gentle care.

Today is World Prematurity Day. The main aim of the Day is to raise awareness of the impact of preterm birth and advocate for quality care for every baby who is born too soon.

Premature infants who receive breastmilk, either their own mother's milk or donor milk, often have better health and developmental outcomes. It is crucial for hospital staff to educate mothers and advocate for these babies to receive breastmilk. For premature infants, breast milk can reduce the risk of serious conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), sepsis, and chronic lung disease, while also leading to a shorter hospital stay.

Colostrum is not just your baby's first food. It provides multiple benefits. It's highly concentrated with nutrients and antibodies to fight infection and protect your baby. It is produced in small amounts which makes it perfect for a baby's small tummy. Colostrum is thick and coats the intestines to keep pathogens out and also provides a laxative effect to help clear meconium and reduce concerns for jaundice. Even if a parent chooses not to breastfeed, colostrum can be hand expressed and given back to baby via syringe or spoon so they can still reap from all of it's benefits.
