The residents of South Hills Square were cordially invited to a VIP shopping experience at Macys in the south hills village. A busload of us went over to the store, where we were greeted by a concierge who took us through 2 floors of the store for shopping. After that, we were taken to a private room where we were offered sparkling water, cookies and more! We sat back and relaxed while they gifted us with tote bags and special attention. It was a really lovely afternoon and we look forward to doing it again!

Last week, we celebrated spring by having spirit week, where each day we dressed up in different colors and themes! Here we are in our green, for earth and grass, hat day and flower power day! It was so fun to see the residents engage with the theme and how everyone chose to dress up! We awarded a couple of gift baskets for dressing up every single day, and two honorable mentions to people who got involved almost every day. Dressing up helped us all feel young, silly, and as if we were ‘playing a part in a play’, so because it was different than our daily attire, it turned into a very special event that everyone enjoyed, whether participating by dressing up or by being an observer, and seeing how everyone looked!

Every quarter at our community our Executive Chef, along with the nighttime cook, do a cooking demonstration for the residents! While they are preparing the food on the stage in the theater, there are cameras that allow the residents to see the work on the big screen! The chef explains the ingredients, talks about how to cook the food, and hands out recipes for the attendees to be able to prepare in their own apartments if they like! After the demonstration, everyone is invited into the lounge to ‘test’ the food, and the end result is always an outstanding and delicious feast for the eyes and the taste buds! Our jello dessert, our cheese calzone strips and our deviled eggs were a hit!

Last week, we embarked on an exciting adventure to the Pittsburgh National Aviary! We participated in a special program designed for seniors, an immersive experience where birds soared overhead. One lucky participant even got to feed a bird! While cameras weren't permitted, we did capture a group photo with parrots. Afterwards, we visited another room to see an owl and a penguin up close, though touching wasn't allowed. We then explored the wetlands and tropical rainforest, where birds freely roamed. It was a truly wonderful experience, and we can't wait to return to the Aviary again in the future!

It is said, “it takes a village”, and here at South Hills Square the whole village turned out for our St. Patrick’s Day Passport to Ireland and Pub Crawl! After an adventure on our “plane” ride to Ireland with our attendants giving us a stamp in our passports, we headed over to the lounge which was decorated in the style of a pub! The managers, lifestyle director and the dining room supervisor all posed as bartenders, serving Irish coffee, Baileys and coffee, Guinness beer and Jameson with gingerale, as each resident to go around and choose which drink they wanted! The sous chef prepared a wonderful variety of desserts and appetizers which were enjoyed alongside the cocktails or mocktails! This event was open to the public, as we often invite our community to come mingle with us and to possibly tour the community, in the hopes that they may decide to come live here with us at some future time! So stay on the lookout for other upcoming events where the public is invited, and come mingle with some of the best neighbors around!

We recently hosted a card-making event for our residents with a vendor from a homemade card-making company. Each resident crafted 2-3 cards to send to friends, complete with envelopes. Residents of all skill levels could create beautiful cards independently or with the vendor's assistance. These events typically take place in our lounge with background music. Residents enjoyed complimentary drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and hot chocolate from our machines, available day and night. We also offer other drink options, perfect for any weather – warm drinks on cold days and cold drinks on hot days. It was a lovely, creative, and social activity for everyone!
